I am also in the market for a new radar detector, but here in orlando they send the signals out for when there is traffic ahead, or fire truck is coming or what not. My friend has a detector in his car that tells him this so he can take another route and really helps to save time. Does the v1 have this feature? What about the Bell or the Escort?

The most recent (Feb 2002) Car & Driver just did a review of all the major Radar Detectors. This is their first review in a five year period. The Valentine 1 wins hands down. Only negative comment on it was the price and the fact that it can alarm you with bogies in the city.
Upside? It detects real radar bogies from a much further distance than all others and misses none. Its laser-radar or la-dar detection is the best of all and has the widest cone of detection. They point out in the article that once you use a V1 with the bogie location arrows and band ID and strength that other units seem harder to use.
If you get a chance to get the issue, check it out.

v1 wins hands down without regards to price... it scored a 93 i think...
the passport 8500 came in second with a 76 or something with the bel 980 behind it
like i said, $300 retail vs $400 retail; and the 8500 can be had for around $250 on mysimon.com i believe
all depends on how much money you want to spend... the only advantage the V1 has over the 8500 is the multiple bogey thing and a better radar detection scope; like in degrees of coverage...
