Engines
this isnt really important at the moment
well yea it kinda is
anyways the '98 400 has the 290 hp
right?
opposed to the '93 little 250 hp or somehting around there
pretty weak compared to the 98 but what do u expect
we gotta keep up with time so i can see
spinnyways.... lets just say my 93 engine decides to blow up all of the sudden...
oops so now i would need a new engine ... that would possibly be supercharged or somethinged really cool
to change that 290 to something... well ... up there
can the 98 engine be dropped in to a 93 body with out having to change the engine mounts
is all that i would need besides the engine just a new computer and maybe a new set of tires or maybe even two sets of tires???/\
i dunno..its just something that gave me some curiosity
if anyone knows... cool
just lemme know
peace

I believe the engine mounts are the same. In addition to changing the ECU, you will have to change the transmission (it's a 5-speed versus the -97 4-speed). You might have move around stuff in the engine bay (power steering pump comes to mind, not 100% sure though). Also you would have to change the auto-stick and some of the wiring.
If you were to do something like that, go for a GS400 engine with the 5-speed e-shift transmission, sure, it would probably be more wiring but a SC4 with e-shift would be something!

I'm beginning to think that these engines have a specific nominal output. Think about it.. I get my car chipped and tuned, and I'm making stock GS400 power. A little here an there, and I'll have tuned n/a GS400 power. I feel now that the 4 liter engine can put out a specific amount of power, regardless of the age or gadgetry. Example... my car, easily and suddenly belts out 225 hp at the tires after an ECU upgrade.. a VVT-i motor of the same displacement stock is hardly more than that. Given a better exhaust and tuning, my car will put out what my friend's chipped n tuned GS puts out.
Food for thought.

Max, that's a good point. Generally speaking, it would be much wiser to upgrade the non-VVTi 1UZ than to do a complete drivetrain swap. Take it from someone who's tackled that kind of work several times, you could easily have a 12 second SC for the cash you would end up spending to swap in the '98-up drivetrain.
If you must have the VVT-i motor, sell your SC and start looking for a newer one, otherwise, stick around for awhile, I have a feeling that big gains are about to be realized with this motor, just look at Max and his 38hp gains from the Intercrew.

Well, Mo from SRT is supposed to be making somewhere in the neighborhood of 800hp these days, but that's with a very built motor and over 2bar of boost. I'd say that with a good amount of displacement and 300hp to start with, your bankbook may prove to be the biggest hindrance to producing serious hp....
