Default Cluster LCDs too dim (clock/odometer) - Options?

1998 SC400. I like the stock cluster except for the LCD displays (the temp, clock, and odometer displays) -- they're too dim in the California sun unless I turn the brightness all the way up (which puts your needle lighting at risk, according to some posts here). Ideally I would like them to light up like the Lextech ones but I was wondering if this was something that I could do myself. Also any other options to make them more visible in bright sunlight.

(Sorry if this is a common question. I tried searching but the forum doesn't let you search for three-letter words like LCD! If there's an older thread that I missed, just link me, thanks.)

Thats weird I never have this problem and I live in Arizona. But I also have my cluster all the way on full blast at all times, my needles have been working fine for the past 2 and a half years i've had the car.

Yeah I guess I'm not really too worried about the needles/backlights. If they die then that'll just give me an excuse to send the whole thing to Lextech. But I kinda just like them a little dim. If I have them all the way up and go under a freeway bridge or parking structure/garage, then the brightness can be a little too much.

You said '98, right? You're boned.

Those clusters are cathode fired for backlight and the needles are nothing like the 92-97 needles. They are yellow faced so even if you could mod them, they'll only fire one color no matter what. Basically you are stuck with it.

Ya know, it'd be awesome if...I don't know....someone who like to take things apart, mod things, tinker, had every electronic gadget under the sun, times four....could...oh modify such a cluster...maybe....make some needles.
I wish I could find someone who....did this kinda stuff
