Default Is 150k miles too much for a 1998 SC400?

I saw one local forsale....these things are hard to come by around here....and especially low mile cars. I'd like to know what I should be watching for with this high mile car? I sold my 98 SC300 about u years ago...and I regret it eversince. Will this car go over 300k miles without problems? How much money u think for a timing belt, water pump...etc..to get it tip top shape? Sorry for so many nooby questions...

Do the maintanance on it and it should last over 300k easily. But you can never tell without knowing the history of the car.

Well what is the price? And with any high milaged car look for the basics. In other words if the car looks clean and everything is in place, then it sounds like a car that was treated well. Look at the engine, tires, underneath the car(Exhaust, filters, trany fluid buildup on the bottom of the trany) suspension (if the car is leaning to one side or more), Drive the car, etc. Turn the car on and hear the engine, if is sounds like it runs smooth then it's probably been taken care of, if it sounds like the pistons are firing hard then the car has been beat on. See if the trany shifts smooth, Ask if the timing belts have been replaced or take a look yourself. Smell the oil if it smells burnt then not a good sign also see how dark it is! Also Run a carfax and it will tell you some good info!!! And I would ask the dealer if he replaced all the fluids including the oil.

Personaly for me 150K is too much for a car unless you know it's been taken care of or been in the family.

I agree that it's a bit too much in mileage. If you are planning to just use it as a Daily Driver, just do the usual inspections and maintenance, the car should have another 100,000 miles left. If your plan is to make it shine like some of the beautiful SCs on this site, don't get it. Wait until a lower mileage car comes around. You will be throwing money away trying to bring any car in that condition back to "stock/cherry".

Well i bought my 92 with 152K on it 2 years back, which is around 05ish. So that was in 13 years 152k accrued. That averages out to almost 12K a year. On your hand though its a 1998 Model with almost same mileage so thats averaging a little over 16K miles a year. If thats all highway i would see no real concern.

Also with the newer models the rubbers are seals still should be in good condition regardless of the mileage attained.

they're asking 9900 for it. I saw one local on ebay too today...1998 with 126,000 miles for 12 grand or so. Is this year model prone to having LCA rubber and ball joint problems? That's my main concern...other than oil gaskets and stuff like that..would cost alot of money to fix.

I hate you! I'm from the midwest...so tend to have poor folks who have to drive far to work....so hence the high miles.

That seems like a lot of miles too me in 9 years... but again if they are highway miles you should be fine. the asking price seems a little high as well... i would probably wait for another to come along IMO. But you make the call

I'd go for it. You're better off getting a newer SC with 150k on it than an older SC with 150k on it. Plus 9900 isn't a bad asking price at all. I'd love to get into a 98 with the VVTi and 290HP.

Just look it over, drive it, see what the play is in the steering wheel, how the suspension feels, wear on the seats, etc. That should tell you a lot about how it's been maintained.

I live in the Midwest my SC has 58,000 on it now....
150k is nothing, look at OLTs gold SC, he had something like 250k on it.

my sc jus hit 60,000 .i know the older v8's are prettymuch indestructable and 150k is just breaking the motor in,i cant say the same for the newer ones but once the owner took care of it it should be fine
