Default Soo, my tire just exploded while going 80MPH

****New Pics and Updates on Page 3***

Well, I was going around 85MPH on the highway, when all of a sudden Bam! My left rear tire literally explodes and shreds very badly. I managed to steer the car of the road and out of harms way, but the car took a beating.

I had to towed home on a flatbed .... here are some pics.

and

Ouch! Obviously the tire is done, the paint is covered in melted rubber, and chipped down to the metal in around 10-15 spots (about the size of a piece of Nerd's Candy each) , the bottom of the rear quarter panel is ripped off and missing, and the bottom of the remaining quarter panel is badly dented.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove that black rubber from all over the side of the car? Any other helpful tips or advice on how to deal with this mishap.... or just maybe .. a hug?

Whoa what kind of tire were you running on that left rear? Looks like it did quite a bit of damage. Good thing you didnt get hurt though. As far as getting those tire marks off, you might want to try buffing it until your arms get numb. I had a friend who was rubbed in a parking lot by a truck with big tires. He was able to get the tire marks off with some really good wax and those expensive buffers. I'd try that.

Depends on how deep the rubber got in there and if any metal shards went through the paint. There is top layer that can be sanded down and later repolished (not repainted) and I have seen my uncle, who paints vehicles and is a general mechanic, do this even on my own RX300 as it had tar in some areas.

It was a tiny 15 inch Yokohama, with a TON of tread life left.

In some spots the metal from the tires hit the car, and chipped the paint down to the bare metal. These spots are so small, you have to look up close to see them, but they are there.

I went to an autoparts store and the guy gave me a "prep all wax and greese remover"

*update: This remover is working great ... the tire rubber is coming off. Too bad I can see just how many paint chips there really are though Anyone have a bottom lip that goes under the rear left quarter panel for sale? lol

Doesn't Auto Insurance cover that kind of mishap? If you look at what a 200 dollar tire can do to an entire investment its pretty scary.

Hug?
All I can offer. You'll probably need to get body work done anyway and repaint. Sorry bro.

Thanks for all the comments guys!

Here are some pictures that I took a few hours ago.... I've done some work.
New tires, all 4 and balanced out, some serious sore arm and a paint degreaser

What you can't see in these pics, is any of the roughly 40 small paint chips all over the QP.

I really need to figure out how to get a new body piece for that part on the bottom of the quarter panel. You can see right into the trunk!

It was really sunny outside, and the pictures for some reason look like they were taken in 1970 ... but anyway

Which Yokohama have you been having problems with? Do you have your tires air checked and rotated regularly?
