high mileage 92 sc400s?
I'm seeing a lot of high mileage (100K+) 92-93 SC400s. I'm wondering if any of you could give me feedback about possible problems with SCs of this vintage/mileage. What typically breaks? What typically needs attention service wise? Anynone gone beyond 200k mostly trouble free? How does the paint and exterior trim hold up? I'm dying to get an SC400 but fear getting burned with something unexpected.

Hi,
The things to look for on the older and higher mileage SC's is going to be listed and numbered.
1. Power steering pump and rack leaks.
2. Alternator, if the pump has been leaking, your going to need one.
3. Replace caps and rotors and plugs, that is a given.
4. check for any engine seal leaks, front and back.
5. any sort of irregular idle and missing and valve train noise.
6. Have the valve covers pulled off and check for sludge build up, which is a sure thing that the oil hasnt been changed.
7. Front upper and lower arm bushings and the boots on your axles in the front and back.
8. transmission leaks!!
9. check the condition of the transmission fluid, if it is darker shade of red and brown and smells burnt, BYPASS!! Transmission is going to fail pretty soon. If it is nice and bright red that is good.
10. Give the engine a good steady high rev at idle and check the exhaust for any smoke. blue smoke is piston rings, black is burning rich.
11. water pump and timing chain. On high mileage lexus, if that hasnt been done, Get both done at same time.
12. All 02 sensors must be checked, i would get them all replaced, they are cheap and will give optimal engine performance and increase gas mileage.
Look it over carefully, feel around the engine, and under the engine for any wet, oil spots under the carriage which is a sure indicator of leaks.
The Exterior paint and trim on lexus is some of the best out there, they have very nice and high quality clear coats. Just wash the car at least once a week with a nice car soap like Turtle Wax's product called Zip Wax and dry it and chamois the beauty. Then put a nice coat of Nu-Finish on every 6 months. Just keep the thing clean as possible, wash off all bird ******t as soon as possible, because they contain acids that eat through the clear coat over time. If you take these words with due diligence you will have a long life with you and your lexus.
Good Luck,
Thanks
Erfan
Oh BTW, Stay away from the ragged out pieces of ******t that these guys have around here Just KIdding!
