Default What did they do to my cluster?!

Okay, so last night I pulled the cluster out of my car to check on the fuel gauge (per suggestion from O.L.T.). The 5 screws were tight so I'm guessing my problem lies in the fuel sending unit in the trunk.

My car has always had an issue with the odometer. It either shows the first 3 numbers or the last 3 numbers, and if I go over bumps it'll blip between both sides. With the cluster off I see that the screws that hold that chip down are only halfway screwed in! Also, one of the wiring clips had tons of old electrical tape on it covering up a busted plug and wires that look like they're about to come apart.

Aside from the fuel gauge needle being dead and the fuel gauge not working at all, and the issue with the odometer, the cluster works fine. However, seeing this little wiring mess, should I just get a new one? Try to fix this one? Put the electrical tape back on it and pretend I never saw it? I'm going to send a cluster off to Lextech eventually and don't want to waste their time and mine with this one if it's messed up.

Thanks guys!

I'd love to know. The car was bone stock when I got it. My friend that I got it from has been known to ghetto rig stuff from time to time but from when I was around he never dug into the car much until I got it from him.

I'm pretty handy with a soldering gun if I need to repair this stuff...I'd love to just get a new one but I don't want to spend $200 on a cluster to turn around and spend another $250+ at Lextech with it.

That's obviously the problem with your ODO, but it won't fix your gas gauge issue.

I have another ODO laying around. Lemme dig it out and I'll send it to you.

OLT, what do you think about the wiring? Put the tape back over it and leave it alone since it hadn't failed yet or is just that little wiring harness piece available?

fix it right... if you have some soldering skills, cut the wires, resolder then wrap with heat shrink tubing...

That wiring IS the ODO. Once you replace it there won't be a wiring issue, but that is likely not going to help the gas gauge issue unless one of the wires is crossed. Looking at that unit is probably isn't going to change anything.

PS- the screws on the odo being loose do not make a connection to anything and have no bearing on the effect.

Is there any way to see if the gas gauge is ok and it's just the sender in the tank that's bad without replacing the sender and just seeing what happens?

I have gas gauge problems also. I think it stems from when the dual fuel pumps were put in. Not sure where to even start with it! Let me know if you find a fix to yours as that would be a good place for me to start

yes, you can test it... to do thorough testing, you will need it out of the tank and a decent voltmeter...

obviously, if they both test out ok, then you probably have a wiring issue...

this should apply to almost all SC's, I know it's good from 92 to 95...
