I filled up my gas tank today until the pump "clicked" then I just filled it up and rounded it to the nearest even dollar. The total gallon was about 18.1. So that leaves about 2 gallons left. I was just curious, how much more can you fill up after that pump clicks? I am trying to calculate my average MPG to get my tank filled up as much as possible to see if I can get 400 miles to a full tank. Since I put in 18 gallons, I could probably go about 360 miles until I have to fill up again.

How much money you have to spend? Charcoal canisters are $380 from the dealer and every time you overfill it backfills into the charcoal canister causing a fuel smell that will not go away until you replace the canister (reminder: $380 each time you replace it). You'll get lucky a few times, then once there is enough fuel backed up in there on a warm day you'll start to smell fuel randomly and then you're on your way to the dealer for a $400 reminder of why they put the click there.

not to mention it is bad for the environment... (and enough things we do are bad, this is an easy one to not do)

on OBD2 cars, it can cause other issues as well and even set the check engine light (especially new chryslers - if you fill them past the click, it sets the check engine light for a fuel level voltage high code)

is there a particular reason you have to fill it past the click? can you really get that much farther on that extra tenth of a gallon?

another thing - do you absolutely have to get 400 miles on one tank of gas (I can regularly with highway driving), there are other ways to calculate your mileage... (fill to click, drive, record mileage, fill to click, divide)

I always stop after the click anyway, so I think I should be in good hands. I was just curious as to how much left but I don't normally fill once it clicks. I get about 20 mpg (both city & hwy mixed) so I can't really tell if it's city or highway. but still, this is my test, since I put 18 gallons in, I should be able to be in good hands up to 360 miles.

hmmm.... do you have an sc300 ace? you get a lot of mpg and i thought i got a lot i get 19 mostly city with little highway, but i do have a v8.

The V8 is actually more fuel efficient by a hair (1mpg I think highway/city).

with proper driving and fuel management, I can eek out 26-28 mpg on the highway...

in town, I hover around 20 mpg...

That's stock figures with new EPA regulation. Of course it depends on driving style, area, etc. 28mpg highway is pretty stunning.

If you have a stock car ways to really improve your gas mileage is to get a full tune up, proper inflated tires, exhaust work (our stock exhaust system is by far the worst thing on our cars) and BFI.
