Well I have had many BMW and Lexus as well as many sc's and 5 series and I'll give you the straight dope.........
The 540i 6 speed is the only one that doesn't feel like a pig. The 525 uses the same engine as the 325 which is a much smaller vehicle and considered "slow". Interior wise I have a personal preference for the BMW, outside they are both pretty bland compared to say.... a Mercedes for instance.
If you are looking to replace a 2000 Sc with any year 525 you'll be sorry. If you can muster up a 540i in auto or stick it would be a favorable move, and if you find one with a 6 speed like the black/black/6 I had then rip their arm off and don't look back.

how could buying a bmw be more feasible than your current car?
i must have missed something.
anyways i dont think the 2 cars are really comparable.
ones a sporty 2 door and ones a classier(matter of opinion really) 4 door.
if you need more room get the beemer (baby seat etc). I personally wouldnt trade my beaten up sc for a brand new 5 series, except to sell it and buy like 3 or 4 more SC's, take em apart and make a super SC!!
although an M5 or M3 would definately win me over. linear torque line so good.

There's a prime looking '02 M5 for sale down the street from me for $22k.... I look longingly at it every time I drive past. I don't think I'll ever let go of my SC though =0)

I agree with everyone as your car is a 2000.
Also... be aware that the E39 5 Series has a variety of little electrical goblins that you may encounter... 5/6 of my buddies are Bimmer fanatcs...me included...hehe

I think there is some really good input here and I'm gonna have to agree with everyone else. The gut feeling easily alone tells you the SC is more worthwhile and fulfilling to keep

doesn't compare to the list of sc common problems. It's true that an sc will likely outlast the bmw...... Likely, but by comparison the sc has more common issue that'll eat at you over the long run.

Thanks for the input guys.!!
I posted this to get peoples thoughts on the issue. Im not having money troubles per se, just dont have the disposable income to go all out with the car at this time.
Again.....My first wish is to keep it.
I need another vehicle as I'm currently seeking a job in corporate real estate and need a nice car with 4 doors.
I've done some further investigation into the 5 series and it would seem that they have cooling issues. I've also looked at 540's and these are actually the model I would prefer.
I've notified the guy that Im no-longer interested in the BMW. At this point I will probably just keep the SC and pick up a nice used Tahoe LT.
But I lOVE the loyalty on these forums....
And Again......thanks for the input.
Thats why I came HERE first.!!

I went through the same dilemma....so here is what I did: Got a New WRX TR, white, it's my daily driver as I've put a ton of money into the Lex and wish to keep the miles down on it as it's now at 107k. Also we get rain/snow/etc here in Oregon, and I actually like going down messed up roads....so the Lexus is out of the question for stuff like that.
You obviously want something nicer and classier than a WRX. Have you thought about a Lexus ES or something of that nature and keeping the Lex?
That's what I'd consider if I were you.
