Default Retrofitt R-134A A/C?? What does it consist of?

I went to an A/C shop today and informed them that my AC only blows HOT air. They take out a R134A can and I'm like "Wait.. My car is a 93, this uses R-12 A/C' and he says I know, I'm gonna retrofitt it. So I'm watching what he does, but how exactly does he retrofit it? All he did was hook up this Red hose to the front of the car and a Blue one to right beside the engine. Then he says he's sucking out all the Freeon (But my car never did have freeon to begin with hence no cold air) and then what he did was put a Green Dye and Oil inside and then he pumped in the R134A Freeon. What exactly is the Retrofit? And I don't even know if I have a leak. So he put the new Freeon in, but if I have a leak then it should go back to hot air blowing in about a week or so right? Right now my AC is ICE COLD and I'm loving it. Just hope it stays that way.......Only cost me $100 cash too.

I think changing an R12 to R134 requires changing the fittings. The dye they use is for detecting leaks with UV light.

A true retrofit does not just mean adding freon and changing the fittings. R-12 and R-134 react to each other and can become acidic. To completely retrofit you need to replace the reciever/drier, flush the system completely, drain old oil from compressor, and use a compatible oil for whichever freon you use ( R-134 or R-12 substitute). Otherwise it may work for now but you will probably have problems later on. And if there is a leak your cold a/c will only last for a little while.
