GS I'm not sure on but I think I've also thought it was Grand Sedan for some time. I'm also of the thought that ES was for Executive Sedan but again I could be wrong.
I assume SC is Sport Coupe because it seems the most obvious.
In short, I'm only sure about IS because I remember how dumb I thought it was ... "Intellegent Sport" you gotta be kidding

Supra Child, Stock Car, Street Champ, Sunset Cruiser, Showroom Condition, So Chill, Special Class, Smashes Civics, Strong Chassis, So Comfortable, Sweet Curves,Super Cheap, Smiles Contently, Sweet Colors, Stained Carpet, Smokes Camaros etc...
I can go all night thinking of possible definitions, but the real one is "Sport Coupe."

Well the IROC-Z's didn't have LT1's in them, even an LT1 would smoke our cars hardcore! Of course you can make an SC faster, but you could also make the Camaro even faster than that, and on and on... I was considering selling my SC for my friend's '99 SS, but it wasn't nearly as luxurious, and with gas the way it is now... I'll stick to a slower car

It means nothing. When they started up the Lexus line, Toyota chose to follow the "Letter-Letter-Displacement code" nomenclature started by Acura's alphanumeric names (hated by many at the time it started up).
Interesting article about this phenomenon. I love the line "Remember when cars had names?"
The only thing worth knowing (until someone can quote/reference a Toyota executive explaining otherwise) is:
Altezza = IS
Windom = ES
Aristo = GS
Celsior = LS
Soarer = SC
Harrier = RX
Land Cruiser Prado = GX
Land Cruiser Cygnus = LX

Great article. I always have trouble with the Mercedes names.
