Re-painting graphite door trim?
My driver side graphite door trim looks like crap. It is all marked up and I would like to clean it up. Someone mentioned to me that its possible to scuff it and paint it for a cleaner look instead of replacing the entire piece. Has anyone had any luck doing this? If so, what exact kind of paint did you use and where did you purchase it?
Thanks
Ninja edit: Forgot to mention I am referring to the chrome piece that goes around the outside of the window.

I know the feeling! I left this as is, but it just draws the eye and makes the car look old and prob. encourages door dents from others as my theory is that people dent up cars that appear "old"....
So here is what I did: The MOST important step in the entire process is the removal! Other posts will note using a flat head. The issue is that you can easily put dents in the piece during this process. I'd consider using a paint scraper or something that spreads out further. Once you dent the thing it's going to look like crap no matter what type of paint effort you put into it. So work slowly. The factory simply used double sided sticky tape for these, nothing special.
Once removed, simply sand, primer, paint. Use a matte black style paint. The point is that it's basic and doesn't draw attention, so avoid some high gloss garbage.
I did a 7/10 job on mine, messed up during the removal. Some may wish to apply heat to the area to warm up the glue. Just be patient!!!
Again, WORK SLOWLY!!

Thanks for the response. Is it possible to leave the piece on if I do a perfect job taping everything off? Was the paint you used a perfect match? Have any pics of before and after you can post up?
Thanks

Provided you have a 12-pack of cold beer for the taping off process...sure you can do that if you're in the mood.
I think most people choose to remove them though. I don't really have any before/after photos. I wouldn't know what brand of paint would match the factory black best, so I simply used one of the many varieties of semi-gloss black paint. Several coats. It's matte enough to not show every single finger print....
