I just went throught replacing my speakers. 6.5 components in the front, 4" to replace the cracked rears, and a 10" sub.
For the sub, remember that your factory sub was more than likely free-air, whcih isn't the easiest to find nowadays. I learned this the hard way and had to box it and put it in the trunk. When I replaced the head unit, the original amp had to be bypassed b/c of noise. I am only using my new amp for the sub, so the two factory amps are null.
I looked at the DIY on CL for making the boxes in the door fit 6.5s and they turned out pretty good. MDF, Dremel, glue, and you're good. The space for the tweeters was too small for the Alpines I have so I had to round out the edges in the enclosure to make them fit and am gonna find something to make a new grill cover out of.
I was trying to just get sound back to factory spec. The cd changer was shot when I bought it, hence the hew h/u. But the sounds are cranking now!! Those 6.5s make a big difference up front too.
