Default Should I consider a SC400 /w 195k miles?

Looking for a "project" car to work on, but I am not looking for a money pit....if that makes sense?

Should I even consider looking at an '92 SC400 with 195k miles? All the description states is "engine + transmission strong".

It is close to where I am and asking price is $1900.

as far as a "money pit" goes, any project car is. although lexus makes a damn good product, so if its been taken car of I have no doubt it could last a good 100K-200K more, that engine is over-engineered.

for common problems and a basic knowledge of the car, a good place to learn is www.intellexual.net

sc's can be a fun, reliable, and sleek car if done properly.

I am where you are at. I just purchased a 1992 SC400 and the owner could not afford to keep it up. My electronic skills inabled me to fix some small problems such as window, cluster, antenna and other such things. However my machanical skills are limited to changing the oil. I have a machanic that I am confident with and he has repaired the line that drops fluid on your alternator as well as replaceing the alternator. In short I just love the car.

maintenance on these cars alone can be that dreaded money pit. Suspension parts alone are pretty expensive if you're on a tight budget.

I'd get it, trash the motor, then put in a Chevy Beretta motor... Far more reliable and much more powerful.

Awesome motors. Mine is a at 205k now and runs like a champ. Plus you can source them for less than $1,000 all day long with 60k or less.

My first SC had 210k and had nothing wrong with it. The only reason I decided to sell it was because a manual 300 became avialable.

Decent Deal, you'll have some fun with that car

200k is nothing if the 1uzfe is well maintained. check the thread about the high mileage sc's and you'll notice most that reach 300k are 1uz. i just replaced my valve cover gaskets last week, when we opened it up it still looked so clean at 122k. the motor and the tranny when well maintained are indestructible. it's the suspension that you have to look out for, control arms, rack bushings all have to go if they haven't been replaced. engine mounts and tranny mounts too.

a non money pit project car is an impossible statement.

but the reason you should get it is nomatter how much you beat on it, it will most likely work well enough to get around. If you would like to stop all the squeaking and clunks that come with a 200k car, be prepared to replace most of the rubber items eventually, especially in the suspension. 1900 is a good price, just fix it up in time.
eventually... they are all moneypits
