You should just be able to use a clay bar to remove the rubber scuffs. Don't use any paint thinner or any crap like that because you'll destroy your paint.

Same thing happened to me, lost air pressure on the highway from a nail and was driving for awhile apparently. The wheel ended up "slicing through" the tire. It felt a little loose at one point and as I started to pull over to look, I heard it come apart. I was able to remove the marks with some polish, wheel came out a little scuffed but OK. More or less the same wheel even. Maybe it's the wheel!!!!!!!! JK

On the way to work this morning, I saw a local guys 2-door BMW on a jack with the tire and driver gone, emerg. lights flashing. I would love to remove my jack and spare, seeing this guy made a believer out of me to keep them in the trunk. I will have to loose the weight some where else.

Yeah, I was wondering if it might be some kind of defect. I can tell you I probably won't be getting these brand of tires in the future. Bought wheels and tires used. If I had only went to the air pump after I saw that I probably could have avoided this. I think it will be okay. That side isn't the best side anyway and already has some minor dings/dents. I'm not even sure if it caused any new dings/dents, but looks minor. It appears the tire scuffs can come off. The tire brand is unknown but will find out.

That is quite an interesting pic of a similar Axis wheel with about the same type of problem as my tire. Mine looks more shredded and burned through. Yours looks more ripped. When You have the 3" lip (). I might just put another tire on it in the spring (going back to stock wheels for now), but I really want some wheels in better condition anyway, with a bigger lip; 3" at least.
