audiophiles.. what IB sub are you using?
Any SC audiophiles out there using a sub in the stock location other than the "marketed" infinite baffle subs (JL IB4, etc)?
Does anyone have any kind of numbers about the volume of the stock trunk?
I just got a SC400 and am planning out a SQ system for it, and I'm looking for a better sub than the basic "free air" subs that you find today. Ideally, a high Qts (mechanical and electrical resistance), low Fs (freeair resonance), and a small VAS (amount of air required to support the suspension) is what to look for spec wise. However, I'm looking more for a subjective opinion on a big league subwoofer that will perform well with infinite baffle in a SC.
Opinions?

This is going to be a SQ (sound quality) system, hard hitting is not the goal and does not mean anything when comparing the quality of subwoofers. A properly prepped free-air setup can have a response curve out of this world.

It is going to go in the stock location, yes.. but not as a replacement. The person I got my car from took it out! There will be nothing stock about the system, though - enclosed kickpanels, balanced signal, bi-amped active front components, time alignment, etc. I'm just looking to see if anyone else has installed a high-end SQ system in their SC, and if they kept the sub infinite baffle, which driver they went with and what they liked about it..
I've been eyeing the PPI DCX 104 10".

From what i've heard its actually superior to the JL sub plus you'll have plenty of clearance above the gas tank due to its slim design. i've heard some people running into issues because of the size of the JL magnet. I however had no problems and am relatively satisfied with the sound. The depth of the bass was comparable to a 12 inch sealed box i had in the trunk before. except now I am left with much needed trunk space and the trunk no longer rattles. hope this helps.

I'm afraid you are mistaken, Infinite baffle applications (when the trunk is properly sealed from the cabin, and the baffle does not flex) have Amazing sound quality. Many IASCA finalists run IB setups. Also, speakers in doors (without sealed enclosures) is infinite baffle........

The only driver your going to be able to fit that's going to give you the SQ your looking for is a Dynaudio MW190. My last SC400 I did a MW190 running off of a JL audio 500/5 (250 watts to the sub). It sounded very good and was pretty easy to tune. Focal Utopias in all other locations of the car. It was a pure SQ car. The only negative you will have is the back decklid will have to be cut to accomodate. A nibbler makes this very easy. I don't have pics anymore of that car but this will give you an idea of what I'm doing now on my SC300. Thread here: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/lex...rsion-2-a.html
Your going to have a very tough time doing kicks in this car. There is no room in that area at all. I looked at doing that also. I've had very good look in tuning with the 701 processor in my car with the front speakers in the factory locations. Some time delay on the driver's side worked wonders.
JL audio is going to be releasing there 12TW5 out next month. A sealed enclosure could be built for it under the decklid for it that sits on the tank. I personally think this would be a better route than IB.
The only negative about doing the IB setup is your not going to be able to run a lot of power on whatever driver you decide to put back there. On my old car I tried just about everything from JL, Pioneer, Kicker, you name it. The only driver that came close to the Dyn was an Image Dynamics (10) that I had back there for a while. Gas tank just really limits you here.

That's a nice setup you have there, I've been wanting to try some morel mids for a long time. What is your soundstage like with your mids in the doors and the time alignment? That was my #1 concern was being able to get a good stage in this car.
You're right, I was out measuring and it's going to be super tight in the kickpanel area after I give my mids enough airspace. I'm leaning more toward building some pods on the bottom front of the door right under the stock speaker location only a little more forward so it's close to the kickpanels. That way, I can at least aim them.
That dynaudio sub looks Nice, when you ran it IB did you have your trunk sealed off good? IDQv2's are another sub I had my eye on. I've got an amp rack planned that's in a similar spot to yours, in that area under the rear deck.
