MKIII Supra Should I?
#16
I've owned 2 mkiii's a 92 5 speed NA, and a 89 Turbo Auto that i swapped a 1j into. Unless your going to go the fully built 7m (be prepared to spend 3k+) or a J series motor, don't waste your money or more importantly your time. These cars are in no way shape or form a "reliable" DD .

Keep in mind, without the M family of engines, there would be no JZs. 25 years of trial and error.

I would buy the supra, the tranny is worth $500 alone plus you could sell the motor/lsd rear to some nut with a cressida and probably be able to make that 1k+ back in parts AND have an R154/clutch pedal that can be made to fit an SC.
Ive owned a 91 Turbo and a 92 Turbo supra and i would never go back to an "M" series engine again, i LOVED my MKIII's but i wouldnt buy another unless it already had a "XJZ" swap.

Because all the morons blow them up because they are "race cars" doesn't mean they are unreliable. If you put a head gasket on a 7M and torque it like it SHOULD be (72 lb/ft) its just as reliable as a 2J. 99% of the problem with MK3 Supras are the asshats behind the wheel.

Yeah just like no one cares about the 2jz huh???
The fact is that the US just never got many of the really good engines because of emissions, why do you think most boosted cars over here came with mass air setup when they came with MAP everywhere else??
Its not just a JDM thing, E36 M3 owners want the euro spec (no emissions) engine because its got more power/6 speed etc.....

I think he should buy it.
but seriously, please dont put that turbo on your car. it would suck and too much fab time.
for 900 bucks he can rip out the r154, all the little stuff you need to do an auto to manual swap, slave cylinder, master cylinder, pedals, etc...
the only thing he needs to buy is a bellhousing and a 1jz flywheel to make it work.
then the shifter extension or modifying the shifter.
lots of people do this.
then he can make his money back by parting out that thing, or rebuild it at his leisure down the road. sourcing all the parts for an auto --> manual is more expensive than that whole car.
the tranny is at least worth 600 if its in good shape, you can sell the original bell housing, injectors ($100), turbo, MAF, various interior pieces, fenders, etc..
