Keith,
Dang, I never even considered the reprecussions of heat and humidity on my car! Wow, that must really suck. I get a lot of cool coastal marine air here, very compforatble humidity level and good for the car. Here's my current weather at weather.com:
5:30 PM
57°F Feels Like: 53°F
UV Index: 1 Minimal
Wind: From the West at 16 mph
Dew Point: 48°F
Humidity: 72 %
Visibility: Unlimited
Barometer: 29.96 inches and rising
ChrisK,
Yeah the Import Toys filter is made by some other company, but it's parent company is API, which is why I refer to it as so. That's the loud one I used, and yes I'm using K&N's RU-3580 right now. It's much more tame than the API in low gear. The API will howl in first gear. The K&N does the same, but not as loud.
Pete,
Nice to see you around here again. I'm using the brake vent below the passenger head light for raim air, but if your setup feeds just as much air flow, then I'd say it's better because mine traps rain water. I even made the ram air scoop flare out at one edge and cut it lower, which helps with dust and dirt. Weapon R does make a full intake system for our cars, but IMO it's too much plumbing and is probably as restrictive as stock! BTW, I love those Soarer exhaust clips Made me take my mufflers off and drive around a couple day just to hear it in real life. Way too loud!!! Rings my ears from inside the car!

my ram air
Here is what I made from fiberglass. I didn't drive the coupe in the rain, so I would not know about water issues. Had none when I took it through for washes though.
I pulled the whole snorkle, airbox and had the conical filter with heatshield.

Here's my raim air, the water issue is no big deal. I was just specifically looking for water after driving through the rain on the freeway. The only thing that was wet was the intake filter. There isn't anything around the intake that'd suffer a short or rust anyway....

View from the other end. Scoop meets up directly with the intake filter. There is a slight gap in the scoop to create a low pressure draft that sucks dust and dirt away. A little water will still pass though. No big deal...

Yeah, should fit. I added a 3-inch extension piece in between the MAF and filter and it fit well. The 3-inch extension pushes the filter to the very opening under the headlight, and since the top is capped, this only obstructs incoming air. Do you have a picture of the RU-1047?

Unclipped the airbox lid today, and that was a positive improvement. Man, it's so noisy gulping for air, as loud as removing the schnoz. Thanks for that tip Peter, didn't realize you could remove it like that.
