Just out of curiosity, what kind of battery are you running? The reason I ask is because every time my battery tie down brakes my battery slides on other to the power steering pulley and shreds a huge hole on it. The vapors travel into the cabin smelling like rotten eggs which is in fact sulfur.

LOL I just noticed you are in CA. Just go to a muffler shop with a tub of KY. From what I have heard CA now requires all cats' to be OBD2 and need to be CARB stamped for it to pass smog. With that said... they charge us up the you know where for new cat's. If a shop gets caught by hollowing them out will get a nice slap in the hand.

i have the same problem....I've research it...and it might be what they call a "lazy o2 sensor"...or it can be bad cats..
My question is...if we switch to a high flo or a straight pipe...I have a 96 and if i'm not mistaken it's a obd2 car...Will the car pull a CEL...??

1. Bad O2 sensor
2. No Cats
3. Hollow Cats
High flow cats will not throw a code because they still function properly, just like OEM cats. Of you want to hollow out or put in a test pipe without a CEL then buy an O2 Sim

If its from the engine bay its most probably not the cats, unless you have an exhaust leak. First correct suggestion would be your battery, look for signs of acid leaking from it. Second a bad cat wont pop, popping shows it functioning, specifically pertaining to whats called a type III cat like our vehicles carry. Also, check for oil leaking, depending on the type of oil you use, it can smell pretty funky when it gets burned off by the header.
