It shouldn't matter what you buy your kids, or what you let them
drive or wear if you're a good enough parent to teach them
proper behaviors, discipline, and mannerisms. Snobbery is the
combination of a lack of parental guidance (neglect), and
compensation with outlandish gifts and possessions.

My question to you is, regardless of self-confidence or lack
thereof, why handicap your child with a $2000 joke of a car that
only invites criticism, when you are fully capable of providing him
or her with a nice, decent, midrange, trouble-free, late-model car?
I'm not talking Benz here, just a brand new Honda or Ford. I
mean we are talking if you were very, very comfortably rich here,
not if you had to take out another mortgage on the house to
fund the down payment.

mjames08 -- right on! buy them a rolling shell, then work with them to build an engine for the car. A great way to spend some quality father/son time. Tell stories about the great cars when you were a kid, that kinda stuff. Just giving free handouts is a great way to spoil a kid into self distruction.

Blood, sweat, and tears while building a car will make it mean more to a kid. Plus that would be insane bragging rights!
