Question SC400 any good?

Hello all.

I am new to this website and forum and I cant seem to search it very well. I am very seriously considering getting a lexus. Everyone here seems to love them , and from what I understand they are pretty modifiable. I currently am an Acura guy. I drive a Legend and an NSX (and an explorer).

This Saturday I am selling my Legend and Ill probably have my explorer sold in a month. So I am looking to get a SC400. I am thinking about a 1994-95. I need a car I can put a lot of miles on. Can this car handle a lot of miles? how many is the engine good for?

can someone point me in the right direction where I can find out the differences in the SC400 based on the model years? ( ie- how much power, body style changes, etc). any website addresses? I am also wondering. whats the single best upgrade to a stock SC400- say if I want to invest another $2,000?

I appreciate your help

If you want to modify (for performance), get an SC300 so you can turbo it. I wish I would have. My SC400 has 123K miles now and no sign of any problems. I know many others on the site are close to 200K. I wish the car had a bit more pull in the low end, which is why I'm considering a torque converter. Supposedly it's the best performance mod (aside from turbo, which is not avail on sc400), but it's like $900 + installation.

SC400 products are on the way. Right now get the TC($900) from Swiftracing.com and get the ECU from Weapon-R($850). That will total up to $1750 plus the installation of the TC which is around $300-$550. If you wait a month I will be selling my WR ECU since I am going the way of forced induction =)

The SC400 is a good car. There are many here with around 200k and no problems. Someone has mentioned that the 1UZ-FE engine is good to 400k miles, which is damn good. As far as the aftermarket, the SC400 is about average. There isn't a whole lot of variety for what you can do under the hood right now, but a turbo kit is on the way.

The model year differences are here: www.intellexual.net/sc400frames.html

Holy smokes:eek:

400,000 miles.

I'd like to see his service records. How often did he service his SC to make it last that long....

Default thanks for the website.

Doesnt seem to be many changes for the years I am looking at. 1996 and older. I see a lot of the SCs have modified intakes. I even noticed that there was a company claiming a 30 HP gain from just an intake? is this true.. or complete bogus?

I was reading it in the GS forum.

I am really considering a 1994 or a 1995. is there anything I should be asking the owner about? anything known to go wrong on the SC 400s? transmissions? timing belts?

what does the torqu converter do? I appreciate the help.. on the NSX formum I am on.. there is a FAQ you can go to... cant find one here.

That intake is B.S. There is no intake out right now that would give you 30hp alone.

I highly doubt 30hps gain from an air intake alone. I've messed with a million intakes and they aren't all that spectacular. Little bit of enhancement, but I surely didn't feel 30hps within legal speeds.

Some problems addressed with SCs (and these aren't global problems, most are encountered by less than 20% of us) are power steering leakage, loose door hinge joints, gauge needle lights die, and some people had the lcd screen leak/crack on their climate controls. There might be some other small issues that I missed, but remember a small minority encounter any of these problems. Personally, I haven't experienced any of these problems with my '95 SC (knock on wood). No problems encountered here with timing belts or trannies either. Some people here are driving on 150,000 mile old timing belts.

Owning my '95 for a while now, I can tell you I really miss having these features from the 1996:

Rear-window glass-imprinted antenna
Pre-tensioners added to front seatbelts
Adoption of electrochromic mirrors
Moonroof adoption of one-touch open slide function.

interesting, i wonder which year/model legend u had? was it a 6spd by any chance.

this is purely personal, but in terms of style, i only wanted '97+ year of the models (difference in taillight and front) when i switched out of my legend.

and like u i wanted a sc4 first but got a sc3 5spd instead. i simply didn't want to regret not being able to modify it to beat practically any car out there

supra is always something ppl want, but few ppl know that the sc3 is the surpa + luxury + class
