I have a '94 SC400 with just under 75k miles on it. Vehicle is stock, never a problem thus far. After taking a 30 min trip the other day, I noticed a whine when I pulled into the garage. High pitched, single frequency, didn't change with RPMs. The noise went away in Park and Neutral, but was present in Drive and Reverse.

I haven't driven it again since and called my mechanic to see if he had seen this before. I thought torque converter since it only did it in D and R, but he said he would check the transmission filter first. His shop did the 60k on it about 2 years ago, but he said they don't normally replace the tranny filter and that they had seen a few get clogged.

Any other suggestions? I plan to start it up again tonight and see if the noise is still present. If it is, I'll have it flat towed to the service shop; otherwise I plan to drive it there later this week.

Any advice or other opinions appreciated.

shouldn't be anything wrong w/ driving it to the shop. the filter thing sounds right.
