Default About to buy my first SC300, need opinions

Truth be told I am a mustang guy, but I love the way sc's look. I made the decision to go ahead and start looking for one. Here is where I need some help. I am a certified toyota/lexus technician and my brother is a certified body tech. With that said, I have seen alot of sc's for sale with a price of around $2000-$2500. Cars of that price range need some work and are all automatics. For the price of $5000-$6500 I have seen some semi clean 5spd sc's. If i buy a "cheaper SC" i can afford to do a 1jz, 5spd swap, paint job, etc. If I buy one in the higher price range I will be out of cash and the car will have to stay as is while i save some more cash. Me and my brother will be doing all of the work ourselves which will save me a ton of cash. What do you guys think?
Here are some pics of my single turbo mustang. My brother painted it and I did all of the custom turbo fab work.

sell the mustang and build a nice GTE SC300...with enough boost you will laugh at your turbo mustang..just my opinion, but that is a good looking mustang.

Ive owned 7 fox bodies from stock to full race and just recently i sold a 99 cobra to get back into an SC so im very familiar with mustangs and SC's. I would say start off with the nicest car you can, mechanical parts are cheap on the SC but interior is where it gets expensive with things such as the cluster, climate control, misc interior parts... new leather etc.... with these cars you want to stay away from "cheap" just get the nicest one you can and do the paint/body etc.... while you save for mods etc...... Also figure what you want to do with it, power goals etc... as the auto is easy to convert and the stock 5-speed is weak so if you want to build a beast it wont matter which one you buy from the start.

Thank you all for the quick replies. My mustang is my "race" car. No a/c, no p/s, etc......so what I want to do is have a very nice sc300 as my daily driver. I'm also leaning towards a 1jz swap.

Thank you! The car gets alot of attention but........The interior sucks and the car is really not meant to be a daily driver. Im always going to keep my mustang. My dad always had and still has mustangs. Im really looking forward to buying my SC.

Since you love Mustangs, you could be the first guy to put an LSX in an SC

Your Mustang looks great. I've owned 2, a '65 convertible and a '69 Mach1
428 Cobra Jet, both new at the time and I wish I had kept them both!
I would opt for the nicest SC 300 5 speed that you can afford and then be patient with the build. I still don't understand the 1J swap desire. To me the 2J
either in the NA-T form or the GTE has more potential. That engine is capable of 700 to 800 rwhp on stock internals let alone doing a full rebuild with a BIG
single. Good luck with your pursuit.

Thank you. With the replies that I have gotten so far it looks like I'll be paying on the higher scale and getting something very clean. I will be fabbing up my own na-t kit. What do you think of this car.http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...e&rdpage=thumb

Being a certified tech and having access to a body guy, I'd suggest getting into an SC with the cleanest interior you can find. Depending on your state and emissions requirements, OBD1 may be the most MOD friendly (92-95). Auto to manual swaps are very easy, especially if you're pulling the motor to swap in a GTE anyways. It opens up alot more options rather than trying to find a factory 5speed. Tighten up the suspension with new bushings and it will feel like a new car when all is said and done.

The 1JZ swap into the SC is one of the EASIEST engine swaps on the planet. It is almost plug and play. The 2JZ require a bit more work, mostly around the wiring harness but there are folks that can help with that (Dr. Tweak).

Poke around on the forums. The 1JZ vs. 2JZ debate has been ongoing since people started putting them in SCs (and Supras and Cressidas......).

Looks nice and clean but still an automatic, I would keep looking for a 5 speed. At the same time that car looks totally unmolested and very well maintained. It could be a good platform for a new project.
