I may know what your problem is. I just had my timing belt replaced last week and I also got a burning rubber smell. But at idle my engine wasn't smooth. My mechanic had a hard time getting the harmonic balancer off and I would think it's like that for most SC's. The rubber part of the balancer was damaged in the process and that was causing the rubber smell. If it is your harmonic balancer, it's important to get it replaced right away! I've been looking for a few days for one and the best new one I can find is from a Toyota dealer. Price is $285. I hope it works out for you and good luck!

If it is your harmonic balancer it’s hard to say if it was your mechanic’s fault. My mechanic said that the rubber piece was going bad before he touched it. Then, it was damaged more in the process of being pulled off. I would think it would be a common problem of SC’s but then wouldn’t more people on this site be having the same situation once they’ve replaced their timing belt? After about 4 days of searching I’ve found some things that may be helpful. The Toyota Supra, Lexus SC300, and Lexus GS300 all use the EXACT same balancer. The part number is 1340746020 for all of them. The Lexus price is about $350 and the Toyota price is around $285 depending on which dealerships you go do. The cheapest used price I’ve found is around $130. A large salvage yard in AL has 3 of them. The number is 1-800-884-0105. Again, if it does turn out to be your harmonic balancer, it’s important to replace it immediately. If that piece of rubber you smell burning happens to come all the way off it could really do some damage. My mechanic is going to charge me hardly anything in labor to put it in. I’m not accusing him yet of anything because he’s doing all my performance work for a really good price and he’s the only one within 150 miles of my area that will do it. Hopefully your mechanic will take care of it for you.
