Speaker space in a SC300
I have been reading all of the different threads on the sound systems in the SC series. I have a question for all of you. I just purchased a 92 model and I want to upgrade the sound system without giving up too much trunk space. Is it possible to install three 8 inch kicker solobaric subs in the rear deck and somehow use the trunk for a box? I hate free air speakers and I want to do everything that I possible can to aviod using one and still save my trunk space. Any suggstions?
Thanks to you all I am going to replace my front speakers with 6.5 in component speakers (I would have never believed that they would fit). Is it wise to put another component set in the rear also or should I go with a regular 3 way 6.5 speaker?
Thanks for your help!!
please post pics if you have them

these two threads discuss that very issue...

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...threadid=41005 (Notice sc300T's response, where he did the same thing in an 89 z28)
Or you can do what SC300TURBO and marcman18 did, and fiberglass up an enclosure that tucks into the side panel of the trunk:

I'm doing the same thing- here's my progress so far (warning: fiberglassing aint pretty):

What size speakers are you going with in the trunk? What knid and size interior speakers are you using? I was looking at the Polk dx 3065 or the infinity perfect componenet series for the front and rear of mine

Those certainly are two popular choices!
....in fact, the Polk 12 is what marcman18 started with, and now he's got the Infinity Perfect 12. You can see pics of both here:

Amazing- the very two product lines you are asking about!
To be honest, I have not yet gotten far enough along in my enclosure to consider what size woofer to put in. You said "woofers", but I doubt if I will use more than one. As soon as I lay a few more layers of fiberglass, I'll fill it with water to see how many cu. ft. I have to work with (UPDATE: it's 1.3 cu. ft.), and then poll the pros on this site and sounddomain.com to see what the best 10 and 12 inch choices are (UPDATE: looks like I'll go with a 12 incher). Watts are not an issue- I'll spend an extra Franklin or two if needed to get the necessary watts.
My mids and tweets remain stock Nak, save the rear one that blew- there is an Infinity 6.5" 3way in there now. The next time Part Express has those Vifa 4" on sale again I may get some to keep as spares for when the Nak mids blow.
My progress is slow (see latest pic below), but I'll let you know what I end up doing. You can see the whole story at:

fiberglass
Why didn't you use fiberglass mat instead of the cloth? I'm used to working with fiberglass since I made the whole widebody flares on my old school corolla. Is there a benefit to using the cloth over the mat. Is the mat too thick to use? I think I will start making an enclosure in the trunk of my sc300 now that I've seen how you do it.

I'll be using both Fiberglass Mat and Cloth...
Some of the curves around the talilight assembly are very sharp, so to follow them as closely as possible, I started with cloth. But I will be using mat as well- I have several layers to go.
Actually, I should not have followed the curves so closely- for more details, see my comments on the sound domain web page I set up:

That is a sweet set up that was in the second thread you sent!
I wonder how that set up would work with 2 10's or 12's in the trunk? And what the actually difference in the clarity of the bass would be as opposed to a free air sub mounted in the rear deck

Not sure which setup you are referring to...
...but in any case, retrodrive did a great job with 2 12 inchers on his LS400 rear deck, and I doubt if he'd go through all that with free-airs if they didn't sound good. You can see what he did here:

But that's a lot of work (AND a lot of RAAMmat- contact him for the best price on the stuff). Plus, look how deep those ID woofs are- no way they'd work on an SC. It's quite a dilemma, ain't it? Hence all the discussion on it!
