92 sc400 thermostat question
history:
so i just picked up an sc400 about 2 weeks ago. since i've gotten it i started doing regular maintenance on it new fluids. cap, rotor, plugs..etc. the other day coming back from work i heard some hissing then a pop and then aaaaaall of my coolant ran out. it was the plastic thermostat housing that broke. i picked up new thermostat housing and gasket and hoses to put back in.
now for my question. when i was under the hood i noticed that the thermostat i was pulling out was just a shell. there was not spring device behind the main cap. i couldnt find any signs of the pieces being there. is that something that the previous owner could have done and my housing was just dryrotted. or did the thermostat just blow up and broke my housing?
ive never seen this before with any of my other cars so i dunno it left me wondering. im just hoping if it was all intact and it did break up no pieces ended up where they shouldnt be.
thanks in advance

it shouldnt have... the load on the spring isnt that much (i hope) and its an outlet wouldnt it make sense to come out as opposed to in. theres just no sign of the other 90% of my thermostat lol .
i even went and checked where it blew to see if there was anything on the ground and nothing
