I'm not sure where you think you're gonna find a complete GTE w/turbos w/ECU and harness in good condition for $2900...

In addition to the complete GTE with harnesses and ECU, you also need: (partial list)

intake tract with MAF and filter
intercooler with pipes
TT fuel pump and ECU
Clutch
Flywheel
Supra TT ignition components
TT water pump
TT belts
TT power steering pump
TT a/c compressor
components to adapt TT exhaust
misc tune up items on the GTE: belts, filters, some new hoses, etc.
other TT components that don't transfer over that I forgot.

Assume you can get a mechanic to do the work for 50/hr, Its gonna take a shop way more than 40 hours to complete the job.

And then you'll end up with a car that runs 300rwhp or less. You've still got all the BPU type stuff to get to 400rwhp. ($1500 for parts).

All told, way over $10k --- probably closer to $20k --$30k if you want to do the 6spd conversion at the same time.
*sigh*
Is all of this set in stone?? I know I needed some other stuff like fuel pipes, and compressor, but all the other stuff? Not that I doubt you but where did you hear this?

If its all true...thats for dashing my hopes. I was getting excited too .

So basically if I don't have the 10k to put into it, a 160k car is probably not worth buying then, right?

Yes, I'll say $6K-$6.5K is about right.
My Green SC400 is not in perfect shape with some minor repair needed. The car was leaking P/S at the time. The owner was asking for $8.5 but after two months he couldn't sell it. I guess it was because of 145K mi. on the clock and it cost ~$800 for a garage to replace the P/S pump. I could of buy the car for $6K-$6.5K . By the time that I call him and offered $7K, I didn't know that he already lower the price on the classified to $7.2K. I replaced the P/S pump myself (~$150 rebuild from Autozone).
Since then I haven't see any SC300 or 400 for sale that low. I do see some 90-92 LS400 sale about $7,500...
If you're able to fix the car yourself or have someone to do the maintenance for you for less than the dealer/garage then yes buy high mileage Lexus.

I'd just as soon pick up a 2jz-ge with lower miles and swap it in; they can be had for cheap; and the tranny is prolly in ok condition

I'd ask $6500 since you have to replace the motor.

You don't really need to; odds are the car is fine

But the SupraTT swap is VERY involved; you have to swap over the whole long block assembly; ECU and big wiring harness; then if you want the 6-speed and the differential... its A LOT of work

you could still come away cheaper buying a used motor, sitting it in the corner of your garage... buying a toyomoto or customized turbokit, putting that on your original motor; waiting until it blows up (if it does), then replacing that with your used motor... that way you don't get caught with your pants down; and you'll have BPU Supra crushing power for less money
