Default This is real bad...

My car seems to be having a drivetrain problem of some sort. When I go along at low speed there's an intermittent grinding/grumbling sound that seems to be under the back portion of the car.. it's pretty loud. It seems to show up after hard acceleration then slowing down. It also squeaks when I get the throttle just right, and that's not intermittent. Anyone had a transmission die in one of these before?

When was the last time you checked your diff oil?

It's been dealer service till 75k when they scratched my car, I stopped going there. It's 79.8k now, and I already changed the oil. As for the diff oil I don't know. You think it might be the differential? Will oil help or would it need to be replaced?

Default Check your spark plugs and cables

I had a similar sound around 90K and it turned out to be just the spark plugs failing.

I thought I was experiencing major tranny and engine power failure and weird noises..but after they changed the spark plugs and connectors...things were fine.

Check it out Scott

I'd pull the trans pan off and check for stuff asap, smell the fluid?
Maybe check the driveline bearings to see if they're getting hot.
Hmmm.

Sorry to hear you're having troubles.

As to your question, I remember Ladman of ladman.com broke something major and had to swap out rear ends. He used synthetic oil, but he drove his SC hard. So to answer your question, yes I’ve heard about it before. Let’s hope it’s just something mundane like sparkplugs.

It was actually the exhaust system rattling against the brackets, I had to have them remade, but it stopped the problem.

Glad to hear that Mad! You've come too far with your car to have a setback like that.

whew.... Made-ya-look!

That's what I love about lexus... every time you think it's a big problem, it's a minor one. Glad to hear it's something small... now back to my 10 page paper....

You are the man. I have 91k miles and was looking through the previous owners maintainance records and never saw a plug change. Lately I have been feeling like the "transmission" or rear end was going , but the fluids where both changed at 75k. This could leave me to believe it probably is just the plugs. Thanks

It's been awhile since I've done any R&D work, but one thing that I remember is that whenever something is acting strange,go to whatever you messed with last, and you'll usually find the answer.
