Would someone mind explaining "rice" to me, and what that means exactly?

Thanks.

The term rice embodies a lot... For me it means:

-Dressing a car up excessively (I have a friend with literally dozens upon dozens of neons throughout his Camry, I also think using indiglo all over is ricey: peddles, gauges, doorsteps, license plate frame) Also paying too much attention and money to details like shift *****, seat belt pads, air fresheners, peddles, various auxiliary gauges, etc can be rice---especially when you've spent all you money on that little stuff and haven't even bought new wheels yet.

-Displaying decals and stickers for products you don't use (NOS is a popular one)

-Pasting too many stickers on your car (I especially hate "Powered By" stickers/visors. Duh! It's a Civic, we know it's powered by Honda!)

-False badging on a car (VTEC on an '87 Civic, Z28 on an RS Camaro)

-Non-functional designer exterior upgrades that hopelessly try to imitate something they are not (triple-stacked wings, hood scoops for non- ram-air equipped cars, Z3 gills on the fender)

-Widely agreed upon tacky styling (chameleon paint, gross bling blingy rims, color-themed interiors like red-yellow combo)

-Anything that imitates but doesn't duplicate (false turbo spoolers--noise makers, fake disc-brake inserts)

-Some people claim excessively powered stereos are rice (8,000 watt sound systems with four 12s and dedicated car batteries)

Hmm, there's probably more, but that's it for now...

PS: I'm not trying to bash anyone here, everyone has their own unique style preferences. I know neon and indiglo is a hot thing in the South and Midwest so you'll probably get plenty of props from folks down there. I'm just outlining what rice is described as as per Cali style. Your car is an extension of yourself, you should do to it what you feel expresses you best, not what others think would look good for you. Do you let people tell you how to dress? Do what you do and be proud of it as long as it's not too in-your-face outrageous. If you like indiglo doorsteps, go for it. My personality thinks that they don't blend well with the whole Lexus image (interior or exterior). Some may disagree, which is okay. If everyone drove around the exact same baller SC, it would get boring pretty quick.

Rice is when you have a 0-60 time of 10 seconds and you spend all your friggin money on stupid accessories instead of engine performances... There are a alot of other things that make a car a ricer IMO... it really depends onthe person, but if you see a civic, your first reaction is ussualy rice, atleast mine is.

lex400sc,

That is flat out, one of the funniest things I have seen in a while! I'm sure the other people in the office here were wondering why I suddenly burst out in laughter

I'm going to get big stickers that say

'POWERED BY JASMINE'

or

'POWERED BY CALROSE'

Rice eaters know what's up..

I'm sorry, but there is a reason you can only fins them for Honda's and Acura's.

Just think about it.

I totally agree with Lex400SC's definition of rice. Ricers tend to do mods for two reasons: to draw attention to their vehicle, and then to make it appear to incorporate features of much higher end vehicles (e.g. Altezza lights, Z3 grills, M3-style side mirrors)

Believe me, I'd be the last person indiglo plate frame on, or those indiglo racing pedals, or anything like that. The illuminated door sills are just a nice finishing touch, not something that screams for attention while the car is in motion. I think ricers picked up on these sills after seeing them on cars like the E55 AMG and SC430.

Now IMO that looks classy. I have a gold SC too and a gold door sill with indiglo lettering would look very nice. Its not very flashy or rice. Its just something that adds something to an empty spot. Now if you got like a windshield decal with Lexus on it, a indiglo Lexus plate and a powered by Lexus on the car this would be overdoing it. Adding too much would kinda kill the look of the car.

As a side note...what the heck is that red thing in the picture?
