Default SC3 & SC4 ?'s from a newbie...

Hello , I am new to this forum & are new to Lexus in general. My current daily driver is a 94 Volvo 940 turbo that I just sold & my weekend warrior is a 95 RX7 that is also up for sale. My wife is on her 2nd 4Runner , we are very familiar w/ Toyota's reliability & quality.

I have recently been looking at replacing my dd w/ a 92-98 SC300 or an 92-98 SC400. I have a few ?'s...Before I get flamed "USE THE SEARCH FUCTION!" ... I already have . I have been lurking here for a few weeks while I also looked into buying a Toyota Tundra or Tacoma, I drive a 30+ mi 1-Way commute & are leaning towards a car vs. truck because of the added comfort on long drives, I just made an 800 mi trip from AZ to TX in our 4Runner & it wasn't a bad ride. But a Truck/SUV just cannot be compared to the comfort & smooth ride of a car.

The SC400 I have been looking at are better deals than the SC300's, although that isn't much of a factor in making my decision.

How much faster is the 260hp 1UZ powered SC4 vs the 2JZ equipped SC3 ? I have test driven both in automatics & I cannot really tell a difference. 1/4 mi times.. mid 15's ?

I would be interested in a bolt on turbo kit for the SC3 or a bolt on s.charger for the SC4. What are the pro's & con's of each ? I am looking for about 350-450 rwhp, not a complete exotic 700 rwhp demon

Why should I buy an SC3 over an SC4 ? Why should I buy an SC4 over an SC3 ?

My initial impressions of bopth cars are similar , silky smooth ride w/ moderate pull. I prefer the sound of the V8 over the I6 though, but that really doesn't matter. I am basically split between the 2, my first instict would be to go V8 of course, but after driving them I can't really feel the 40 hp difference that is probably offset by the added weight of the 4.0.

Any advice, insight, or experiences with either would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time & thought.

I'd suggest a 5sp SC300. If you really really need an auto, so be it, but I'd go w/ a SC300 either way. With simple & cheap modifications to a SC300 5sp you can be running just as a fast as an SC400. The AT in the 400 eats alotta HP. Both 5sp 300 and the AT 400 make about the same stock RWHP.

The SC400's 1UZ-FE 4.0L V8 isn't significantly hevier because the V8 is a aluminum block, and the SC300's in-line 6 2JZ-GE is a cast iron block.

The SC300 also has more aftermarket potontial.

Superchargers for the SC400 are really custom deal. No one has yet to produce a kit that actually works and is mass produced. If anything was even close to feasable, Lex Luthor would have it on and installed already.

If you'd like a car with above 350 HP... get an SC300.

Did I answer all your Qs?

Default Thanks

Yes, you gave me some info to chew on & think about. If i could honestly find a 5sp SC300 in any color other than BRIGHT! ferrari red I would buy it. BUt 5spd's are very hot items, they arent easy to find out here, even w/ 3 million people in Phoenix.

Anyone else have any opinions ?

Thx

check autotrader... you may find a cheaper car someplace else that would offset the cost of transportation. Also the best years are 1995 and 1996 for the 300. They have a larger tranmission tunnel that will accomodate the MKIV Supra's 6sp getrag tranny. It's an awsome transmission.

Default 1 more ?

I have also been contemplating building a Volvo 122 drag car. If I decided to take this on as a project & leave the SC stock, which car would be a better car in stock trim, aftermarket aside ?

I have been a Supra fan for years & are well aware how AWESOME that Getrag 6 spd is. I just don't know if i will ever create enough power to warrant a whole engine tranny swap. A bolt on turbo & a 5 spd would more than suffice.I would only be able to spend 5-6K on mods.

Thanks again for all of your help.

You can buy the fmax kit for 5500, which I belive gives you around 350 hp at the wheels. But if you have a little extra cash go for the toyomoto kit, (6500) much better quality.
