My New 1999 Sc400 And A Few Modifications - Apple TV, Navigation, Audio Upgrades
#16
First of all thanks for all the encouragement! Looks like I'll be replacing the navigation unit on Friday and trying out an AVIC-Z110BT, so I'll post more pictures then.
The main reason I chose the Apple TV was for it's simplicity and I prefer the new Back Row interface to the Front Row interface on the Macs. My next choice would have been a Mac Mini but with minimal modification the Apple TV can have a web browser and with Boxee can watch all sorts of streaming media. Also, the only downside to the Mini on the Eclipse would be the low resolution of the unit which could potentially make OS X hard to use when not in Front Row. The Apple TV also handles hard shutdowns a better than a traditional computer and with no modification boots once power is received. So the Apple TV can do just about everything I want it to do and has an interface designed to be used with a remote. I also like the idea of having a traditional navigation unit/stereo to run alongside the Apple TV, the only downside is no touch screen control.
As for wheels eventually I'd like to get some larger ones and do a bit stiffer suspension. Had an IS350 before my SC400 and I loved the way it handled, the SC suspension is just to soft for me.
So I think you just blew my carputer out of the water.....haha. Very well done so far!!! Great job on the volume delete, the apple tv looks great along with the installation of all the audio components. I am overall blown away by the work put in!!!
Can't wait to see what you do with the rest of the car. Honestly all you need is a drop and maybe some bigger rims in the future but after what you have just done just sit back, relax, and enjoy the car.
Just out of curiosity....why didn't you go with a fully custom carputer setup? Seems like you know what your doing and with the carputer there is no limit to its capabilities.

Interesting.....I honestly had no idea the capabilities of the apple tv until right now. It does seem to have many advantages and is all in one unit which makes things more simple. I'm going to possibly be doing a full rebuild as far as software on my carputer hopefully this month or so to get things a bit more up to date in technology.
I remember when my SC suspension was soft like that.....it was pretty comfy but major body roll. Either way your ride is on a great path as it is so enjoy it and welcome to the club!

I checked out your thread, I really like the integrated touch screen, it looks like it works really well and the install looks nice and clean.

Yeah, the Apple TV is actually just a computer in disguise, in fact with a little effort it can run full blown Mac OS X. I chose to keep it simple and use the Apple TV interface, I wanted it not to be a distraction while driving and still have some decent functionality. The only thing the Apple TV can't easily do is GPS but I don't really mind.

Mine works good....but I also think it can be even better (more user friendly like bigger buttons for better touchscreen capabilities). My roomate is an engineer and a computer guru so the two of us will look into further enhancements as soon as finals are over this week.
I actually took the OEM radio cover and dremeled out the middle, dremeled the xenarc plastic and bondoed the whole thing together so it fits like factory. Took a few weekends but I'm pleased with the results.

Very nice mods! I love your car and the clean installation of your system. That shaved volume **** turned out really well! I might have to attempt that or maybe wire it up to be useful again haha.
