Default Vinyl & Fabric paint?? Nightmare or Savior??

Hi everybody,
I've been searching the net for some time to get a solution on my tired old beige carpet. A new carpet from the dealer is hella expensive.I tried to find a used one but they don't have them in black(for a tan to black conversion).I reluctantly started to research the leading vinyl & fabric paints that are available. They seem to be a good alternative, and i'm thinking I should just paint the carpet black and be done with it.My only fear is that the end result will be a crunchy textured carpet. I need opinions from you guy's on whether I should do- or do without this quick fix.
All opinions and/or photos are welcome.

From my experience, you can use the dye to make it look good if you're careful, but just the nature of spraying a liquid onto carpet is going to make it textured/crunchy.

If you spray it light enough not to be crunchy/stiff, it won't get all the way down... if brush the carpet with your hand, the tan will show through.

I will be doing this soon and from what i read if you comb it while you spray it will cover evenly and not make it crunchy. Once dry, comb it more and it should be fine.

Ritz dye with a little SEMs will work. I sprayed mine with SEMs first, not too thick...then I used Ritz dye and it is not crunchy. It is the SEMs that will make it crunchy if you are not careful tho.

I looked this up on another car restoration site and the guy had a carpet that'd been through hell,it had stains everywhere. He sprayed on this product in black and said after the paint dries you have to get a few of your friends(with clean shoes)to step on the carpet repeatedly to get it back to at least 90% of it's original plushness, then brush it to bring back the grain pattern.
I would guess with a little time & effort the carpet should come out looking good or at least 1/2 as good as the original color.
I will try this (fingers crossed) and post the results.

How much are you willing to spend on mats? Why not get custom mats made for under $100.

Thanks for the link but I'm looking for a complete carpet.
I will use these mats to cover the carpet after the color modification.

I say find an old floor mat and test your spray can idea first, then go from there.

I used the local parts store quality dye/carpet paint. It took almost 6 cans, but I did it lightly, and let it dry in the sun for an hour in between coats. The trick is to spray it lightly, and then reapply after it completely dries. In between spraying another coat, brush through it with your hand or a soft brush and spray the carpet at another direction. This will assure to cover it in all directions.
The only problem I have had so far is the drivers mats.. It wearing through the paint a little, and showing a little gray color, nothing major, but this is my daily driver. Nothing a spray can can fix again. This is my experience from spraying carpets and mats..
