Question 95 SC question

I'm really interested in buying this 1995 SC400; it's got 48k miles and going for $19k. The guy says it's in excellent condition, and it looks that way from the pictures he included.

Any suggestions on what I should look for?

I was just at a dealer auction in nj, and a 97 sc400 with 68K went for 18 grand. So a 95 with 19K is alot.

Actually $19,000 is a fair asking price for a '95 with those low miles. Just make sure the car runs well and all is sound under the hood. Any other problems you might encounter will be a breeze compared to engine problems. Listen for ticking, rattling, trembling, grinding, or anything out of the ordinary.

I bought my 95 SC 400 last June on Ebay motors for $17,500 with 45,000 on the odo. It is in very good condition & has ran perfectly since purchased. The price sounds fair, but I bet you could find a better deal unless this car has everything you want in an SC. If it's in excellent condition cosmetically & mechanically, then you probably will not get screwed.

like we said b4 in a diff thread, it all depends on the car and the dealer jacked up price.... on ebay, they had a red on black 98 for 22 with the buy it now... so it all depends.

I got my 95 SC300 last fall for $13,000. It had only 33,xxx miles. But it's a 300, not 400, so I don't know if that helps any.

If it helps any I got my 96 SC400 for $17k, I bought it off some local used auto place and you wouldn't believe the condition it was in, it was unbeliveably filthy but with a spotless and I mean spotless engine and a clean bill of health from my mechanic. (It did clean up very well however.) So in my opinion I think you could do better.

Toog4me: If you still need a place to upload the pictures just send them to me, nitecow@yahoo.com and I'll put them up on my webspace. And that goes for anyone, but I thought clublexus.com have space for you to post pictures do they not?

I paid over $19k for mine, with 67k on it, but it had everything I was looking for and was basically like new, so I feel it was worth every penny, but I know I could've got one for almost half that.

I don't get it, how did I shoot down my argument? Anyone can go to an auction with a dealer(they probably will charge you 500 for their services) and pick one up for wholesale prices. I would rather pay 20K for a 97 SC400 than pay 19K for a 1995 SC400.

This is a fun thread. The right price is what the buyer is willing to pay and the seller is willing to take.

I did my research and drove a bunch of examples before I bought my '93 SC400 two months ago. It had 83K on the odo then - 89K now...

We're always going to compare apples to cucumbers when we talk price. Within normal limits, price will vary due to:

location
supply vs. demand
year
mileage
documented maintenance
condition

and I submit that, with the reliability record of the SC, the last two are the operants. When I found the car I ended up buying, and got a look at its proven maintenance record, and spent an hour with my flashlight (fresh batteries!), I made an offer - - didn't test drive it, didn't start it - -

and I paid top dollar from a local "boutique" used car store.

$15,900 - -

and I got a great deal. They wanted 17, I offered 15, yada yada - -

I looked at a '95 SC4 with only 37.5K on the odo, $20.5K ask, and it was a mess. Another '95 with 96K and in nice shape, new Kumho's and timing belt, $14.5K but no sunroof or traction.

When I drove a dealer-warranted '98 I couldn't afford, I knew what condition I would accept, and when I saw this '93 in the same condition, it made me willing to pay a premium.

Remember about buying wholesale at auction, you make the decision right now, no close inspection, cash money, boom. You will probably pay less, but - - take your time - - this is a production car, another one will come along if this one isn't right - - wait for the right one - - you'll know whan you find it!

Oh, yeah, and Carfax - - great service, even if the record is "clean," look at where the car was sold new (rust), how many owners it's had (I found a '94 that looked pretty good but it but Carfax showed it had had 9 owners in 4 states) - - the car I bought was sold new locally, had 2 owners, first owner paid cash (no lien shown on original title) - -

and lots of little red stamps in the warranty booklet - -
