Drove the car out to my friend's shop on Friday to find out he had to move out of his building while (much needed) renovations are getting done. Kinda weird to see it closed since I'm so used to stopping by here any time I have problems and having access to any tools I need.
^That looks like a fun time. It's a damn shame that California is cracking down on modifications
They always have been, but social media makes it seems worse than it is because everyone complains. It doesn't stop some people from doing it. It's a risk that you take by modifying the car. If you're going to drive a really flashy car, expect to get pulled over. Usually the big raids from the cops are in response to those huge takeovers where people destroy private property by doing burnouts and trashing the parking lots.
The weather here in Denver has been a little spastic to say the least... However, got her out yesterday and cruised around town with my cousin. Just crossed 150k miles and this baby still purrs like a kitten! No plans for it at this time (minus a track day here and there), just enjoying the **** out of it.
I didn't think it would be a huge deal at first. Nowadays most things get hyped up by media then die down shortly after. Our attention spans are shrinking by the minute. But at the same time I did see multiple cars getting towed for having modifications. Maybe I didn't see enough of the police's side of the story. Could've been some property damage or reckless driving involved

I have a few friends who have gotten a ref ticket before, and usually when they got pulled over for speeding or street racing first before they got the ref ticket. I've also had friends that were in the wrong area at the wrong time. They weren't doing anything wrong, but because there was a takeover going on down the street the cops were pulling over all the modified cars. There is usually something that leads up to the cars getting towed.
I've gone to a cars, cops, and coffee (cars and coffee hosted at the police station) with my friends in extremely modified cars (widebody + air suspension + supercharged/turbo). The cops just looked at us weird at first, but they were still inviting and talked to us. We were the only Japanese imports that showed up. Everyone else was in a super car, euro, or heavily modified domestic.
Most of the time people go into it knowing their mods will be illegal, if you get caught deal with it (pay the fine or go back to stock). It's a risk that you accepted once you started modding the car. The laws have been around longer than our cars.
Haven't got pulled over for anything since the late 90s cow-catcher body kit Honda days. And that was only because cops in my area were pulling over people for anything not stock-looking. I even got a modified exhaust ticket stating, "modified exhaust preventing egr from operating correctly".
Driving normally also helps a lot with getting by without hassle.
