This is a sad story... I can see it from both sides though... I rear-ended someone in a brand new ford focus 2 years back (I was laughing about another crash and when i looked forward the traffic had stopped). The police that had responded to the first crash saw me laughing so were keen to register as witnesses to my own 'bump' and testify that it was all my fault.
The other guy eventually agreed to let me pay cash (against the police advice) and I bought him a new bumper/exhaust back box and a few drinks 3 weeks later.
That was a very trusting and kind motorist.
However... If I had just denied knowledge of the accident afterwards, he would have got nothing, as he didn't report it right away.
If anyone ever hits me, no matter how nice they are, I'm reporting it then and there.
