Default A dream to reality. 1jz vvt-i auto sc300

When we set out to build a new car for my wifey we wanted something different.. I have always had love for the jz series of engines.. So i went out to tampa and picked up a shell in need of love. Then placed and order with an importer..

Then started the problems. To the importer and the guys who were doing my swap no one seems to have been able to get the vvti chaser auto set up to work in the sc chassis..

After way more time then any one shop should spend on a car the boys at GRIP INDUSTRIES in melbourne FL pulled off the impossible..

i basically dropped off a 200k mile sc shell and picked up a coilovered vvti powered car that is so much fun to drive it should be illegal. I have to tell anyone with these cars if possible this is the way to go soo much more torque then a regular 1j and even on 10lbs she hauls the mail like nobodys business.. I has doubted i would be happy selling a 700hp car when i got married and finally getting back into something quick.. I can't wait to get the stock hair dryer upgraded and start turning up the wick..

heres some pics so far.. i'm working on the interior now then we start body work and paint..

its been a long road with more to go.. the guys at GRIP do some incredible work..

thanks for looking guys

Thats a great story man. I'm glad it all came together. Is that picture of the rear with it on coils? It seems high and uneven for coils.

ya the coils arent toatally set up yet.. the cars on 295-35-18's and i haven't rolled the fenders yet.. so she sits kinda high in the rear. i could lower them and stiffen it way up but it still kinda rides like a lexus now

I've heard the limit of the VVT motors is EMS/tuning. You can upgrade to single turbo (but you'll have to make your own manifold - the non VVT 1J is not the same port spacing), but the fuel/tuning is the real bottleneck. Do you have a plan for that?

I am still on the fence about VVTs... I really want the low end torque more than anything, but the flaky MAF (vs the easy MAP on standard 1J's), and lack of aftermarket scare me...

the ecu is not a hold back for me.. if you do some looking overseas they use map ecus, aem fic's, power fc's, maf-t pro's, emanage ultimate. just like a usdm 2j gte whish is also factory maf..

also theres is already manifolds popping up on ebay from time to time.. albeit for 399 and up but its just a matter of time till the chinamen knock it off.

honestly for now i'm probably going to go either map ecu or emanage ultimate and have mike turbo in south fl put the garret center section in the stock housing with the 62mm compressor and p trim exhaust and see how far that gets me while retaining all factory piping and look.. it just looks so damn clean in there..

Awesome job! The vvti 1jz motors looks so much nicer.

I don't know much about boost or tuning but I heard vvti 1jz/2jz-gte motors are very difficult to tune. Good luck with everything!
