Default 93 SC400 starts but stalls and shuts off after a few secs

Hey guys,

So I drive a 93 SC400 - 220k miles and I just ran into this problem for about a couple of weeks now. The car will start up fine the first time in the morning. Then after I drive for awhile if I try to start the car up, it'll start up then it'll idles for about 1-2 seconds before it stalls a little then it shuts off with the check engine light, oil light, and battery light come up. It'll work fine though if I start the car and keep the throttle up about 2000 RPM and let it rev for 1-2 seconds before removing the throttle off slowly back to 0. I tried putting in a complete fuel system cleaner in it about half a tank ago and it did nothing for the car. I changed out the spark plugs about a week ago. During the week, I didn't run into the problem until today again. I did some research and it seems like people say it could relate to the MAF or ECU? I don't know, but I'm not sure whats the next step I should take. The oil in it now is 10w-40, should I switch to the 5w-30?

I recently had a similar issue but mine would stall on a cold start but once i get it going i wouldnt have any issue. I took out my fuel filter and it was clogged up pretty bad. I put in a new one and i havent had a issue since. Oh and i have 181k on the clock. The previous owner didnt take good care and probably used regular gas often.

If you suspect the maf while the car is running disconnect it and see if anything happens. If it doesnt you may have a bad MAF. TRy doing a throttle body cleaning service to your car see if it helps.

It's the fuel pump ECU that's causing the problem. My 93 SC300 has been doing the same thing since last September and I just did the fuel pump ECU mod this past Monday and it no longer does it. Here is a link on how to do it: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/per...tures-faq.html.

I say you check that engine light and do a quick diagnostic with a paper clip on the E1 and TE1 in the engine bay. I had a similar problem and it ended up being a problem with me EGR code 71. Car would idle funny, check engine light would come on and turn off sometimes.. and even the car would just stall at start up or at a stop light. So yea.. I recommend you do the check the engine light for a more closer and better diagnostic.

Try doing the fuel pump ECU mod just in case. When my car did that, it would have the battery and check engine light come on as well.

aporozco, get your CEL codes. Even if your CEL isn't on constantly you'll have codes. Jump TE1 and E1 in your engine bay diag port then turn key to on and count flashes

Default stalling

I read here pre 96 SC's don't have Crank and Cam sensors.
I have a 95, and the stalling problem just started this week.
First it was occasional, now it's constant. Stalls while driving.
Any help would be appreciated..thanks.

not true------i believe the sc300's dont have them but i guarantee the sc400's do because that was my problem.

One of my cam sensor plugs was loose causing a random stalling issue.

You have one crank sensor and two cam sensors----its not hard for a mechanic to check them with a multimeter and see if your problem lies there.

good luck

SC400s do have them. No point guaranteeing any diags until codes are pulled
