So i took off the old terminal only to find a metal piece covering the wiring how do i remove this?

which terminal??? Positive or negative?

Pictures or a better explanation would help. As far as replacements I would look into terminals for car audio installations.

Don't remove, just buy new +/- battery terminals that connect to the bolt plate. I replaced mine a few years ago with Wing Nut Battery Terminal similar to the ones in the link below. You may have to file/drill the bolt plates opening for the new battery terminals to fit. I did this for my new +/- terminals.
