Default I REALLY need everyones opinion on my setup...please give your 2 cents.

So Ive been racking my brain for the past few months as Ive been doing the build on my Aristo OBD1 2jzgte, on how too run this motor in my 99 SC300.

See, I live in PA where we have too get emissions done. That's visual and hooked up too the computer and the results are sent to the DOT for OBD2 vehicles.

I have 3 options:

1. Do my best transferring all the emissions sensors onto the OBD1 2jzgte and hope for the best. This means trying too make the GE harness and ECU run the GTE motor, of course with the help of a MAP2 ECU.

2. In the state of PA, if the OBD2 vehicle is kept under 5k miles, it is considered exempt.

3. Your ideas are more than welcome here.

Now I'm not trying too do anything illegal. As long as I pass or I'm exempt, its all good. Id love too be able too make option 1 work, but the more I dig into it, the harder it seems.

I have no clue how I'm gonna make the IACV on the GTE work if I go with option 1. That's really the only thing that's got me tied up with option one, unless someone can add to this.

What say you guys?

How? US harness and ECU?

EDIT: That would also include running an EGR system, right? My 99 SC300 doesnt have and EGR system.

right, we just took a fiends EGR off of his supra if you want it. You will need the USDM harness, Intake Manifold, MAF and what ever else you stumble upon.

I voted for option three. Turbo your motor. Do a NA-t. I know its going to be a little bit of a pain becaus it has a VVTi motor which is a little weaker, but throw a headgasket on there and youre good for like 400whp. I dont know what kind of power youre looking for. you can do OBD2 with a SAFC2 and still pass.....

Edit:
Or- you could transfer plates from a car that just when through when it is time to go through emmissions, if it works like it does here in TN you take the plates from another car that just went through and transfer them to the car you are driving that needs an updated tag.

Opinions are like a-holes: you'll find a lot of them on CL .

Here's my take on this. A HUGE reason why a lot of non-vvti guys go with GTEs is because you don't have to deal with that effed up ignition system. The VVT-i, you don't have that problem as that big *** distributor is no longer in your way. Install a FFIM and single it and call it a day. If you need more strength, swap in an older block with a TT headgasket. All 2j blocks are interchangable.

Guys, I already have a well built 2jzgte in my hands, I have too use it.

This motor was intended for my first SC that was "T" boned 6 months ago. Now, I'm doing my best too use it for this SC. I'm in way too much on this motor too go another motor route.

I was thinking about this, but I think OBD-I was the last international standard. In 96 I'm pretty sure japan went to a JOBD system which may or may not be compatable with OBD-II.

As much as a PITA as this will be, converting everything over to a 96+ spec USDM as far as electronics and emissions go will be your best bet.

Run the engine on an OBD2 TT Supra computer, and make sure you wire up everything that goes to the port where the OBD scanner plugs in. As long as it can communicate, you should be good to go.
