Simple solution really, tell her to quit whining when you have stopped the car.

its not really whinining
its more of a whirring. thats why i think its a pump
the car is a 93 sc400 with about 70000 miles
i also dont get the noise all the time
its sporadic when stopped at lights
havent really found a pattern yet to when it does happen tho
ac is on but i get it in the winters too

It's possibly the water pump or the idler bearings. But any easy item to check is the power steering pump. They are notorious for leaking. Thats when they whine, then go away when it warms up. Just take a flash light and see if it's wet looking. Check the level, and see if the alt looks wet from leaking fluid.

How all goes well.

Verylost;

It is not often I loose patience with the inept but you really should consider taking your car to a shop as you obviously dont have a clue about motor vehicles, would it matter if anyone bothered to to explain where the water pump is located as you would not have clue what to do with it.

The sheer lack of response to your "whining" shows a complete wealth of indifference from the guys around here, we may as well tell you how to change the rear wheels on a space shuttle for all the good it would do.

My advice, find a decent shop, ask for recommendations here, get an expert on the job.

Thank you, awj

london bill,
all i wanted to do was check if the pump was wet.
why should i take it to a shop for that? it takes no mechanical prowess to check if something is wet or not.

Verylost;

It's 4:20am here, I am tired & p1ssed off;

Your last response about checking to see if the pump is "wet" is an example of your lack of mechanical prowess, do yourself a favour take it to the shop, it could be ****all, it could be a ****ed-up tensioner on the cambelt (V/BAD).

Goodnight.

Okay to check the power steering pump first make sure your car is cold then turn it on and have someone move the steering wheel from side to side. If it buzzes or intensifies the buzz when the wheel is turned then fix your pump.

Check the fluid level. If it is too low then you will have a whining noise. Fill it up.

Take it to a shop. Find a place that will let you watch. Read up on every SC post about maintenance and order the factory manuals from Steve at Carson Toyota. There are certain concepts you should familiarize yourself with about your car. That way you know when something small will become big before it is too late. We are here to help but you have to help yourself too. This forum is a wealth of information.

Again, take it to a shop. There may be more wrong with it.

Apologies to all, the weather is getting to me.

Verylost, as a rank amateur you need to start on the basics or work with someone who knows whats what, take it to a shop and listen to what they say.

Not necessary for me at least. I can totally relate, London Bill. That was pretty funny.

No, it really was rude of me to take that line with Verylost so my apology stands.

I would also like to say sorry to the guy who yesterday called me a pr1ck after he smashed his door mirror on my stationary car, he very nearly got Mr Maglight for a butt plug.
