If you are NA the Price $$ to HP ratio is not worth it. If you want something to look nice just get some TIPS and weld them on to your stock system. If you want sound get some universal name brand HKS/Apexi/Magnaflow mufflers and slap them on. But dont expect HP gains for the money you spent.
If you are Turbo then yes its worth it for a $500-1000 system depending on your horse power goals. This is where your Price $$ to HP ratio is spent well. My custom "3 piping cost me about $800 bucks with Dual Apexi WS2 Exhausts ($500) + Piping and downpipe ($300)

When I went na-t for a tiny bit, the exhaust shop I went to did a full straight pipe 3 inch exhaust for 110. It was a seriously tuff rugged exhaust. Im about to get a 2.5 inch now and Im sure it'll cost me about the same maybe a bit more because they have to cut the welds and remove an exhaust this time, last time I went in open DP.
In all, go custom. Unless you want Brand Name which is sometimes what you're paying for.

I have heard come pretty crappy "custom" exhausts though too... make sure u know (have heard someone else's) that your custom setup will not sound like a can of bees or wet fart... That is personally why I am buying a "name brand" exhaust myself...

the $1000 exhausts you're loooking at are more than likely titanium, so they're super light and wont rust. my exhaust consists of a 3" custom stainless down pipe(made by me for $45) to 3" to dual 2.5" pipe($140 at exhaust shop) to 2 apexi n1 knockoff stainless mufflers ($80 on ebay) and my exhaustsound awesome and is super free flowing.

On topic: I think getting a custom exhaust made is the best, its quite cheap compared to the name brand exhausts and unless this is a track car you don't need a titanium exhaust.

difference is mainly in the build quality/bends/sound.
if you go to a muffler shop with a muffler and just have them do the piping for you, most of the time, the car will sound like crap and it will be crush bent piping. I have heard some of those so-called custom exhausts piping and honestly, sounds so much like a raspy honda.
look at any of those aftermarket exhausts that retails for so much and you'll notice that resonators are incorporated into them to give them that deep sound as well as mandrel bends and SS or titanium depending on your choice.

I say if you got the cash to spend the full catback name brand setups are definetly nice, i have had a few...
if your more so on a budget, i still think you shouldn't cheap out on the mufflers.. right now i have a custom setup, 3" from my downpipe back to a apexi muffler..
i think you go custom you should still buy a quality muffler, it will sound alot better in the long run, and ebay mufflers just suck in general..
