sc400 engine block for 15,000?
So I went to lexus to find out some numbers for a new engine for my 1992 sc400. It has 290,000 miles, so i thought maybe i could see how much lexus would charge for a new engine. Well when I went there and asked them they told me that the block alone would be 15,000 dollars. that is just a bone dry block. Is this true or were they just trying to take advantage of an 18 year old brown kid?

you can find ~100k 1uzfes for 200-300$, sometimes I see them free over in the classified. And no, the block would not be 15k alone. Either way, if there is nothing wrong with the engine, theres no reason to replace it, with regular upkeep, you can make it to 400k miles easy.

yeah i'll have to look.. your right if the engine is running then i shouldn't worry, but i am looking to sell it and many people get scared away from it because of the miles. they do not know that these engines are good up to a half a million miles. I dont know I think im stuck with her til she croaks

new engines have always been priced higher. i work at a toyota dealership and a new corolla engine is 22,000. i was told they do this to discourage other manufactures buying them to see how they are engineered.

I don't know who told you that nonsense...car makers regularly buy their competitors vehicles to compare them to their own product.

OP - just enjoy the car, and cross the selling bridge when you come to it. You would spend more rebuilding/updating the engine than you would on lowering the price because of the miles...

Regardless, I'll sell you one for $14,999

^agrees...i worked for a lexus dealership, and they try to get people who dont know any better to buy those motors. a motor with 90K is just as good, just replace critical stuff like WP, timing belt, plugs, wires, you know, give it a major tune up while its out the car. its just like HID bulbs, the dealership still charges $300 for a bulb when one can be had for $20 elsewhere. but 290K is nothing really once its maintained, i had a 96 LS400 with just under 300k when i sold it, the guy i sold it to lived in the same area so he had the car for another 2yrs before he wrecked it, motor was still running strong. at that point i know that motor had well over 330k.
