Spark Plug Change
We have a 92 SC300. We wanted to change the spark plugs ourselves. Since the engine is a inline-6, the whole intake is above the spark plugs, and must be removed in order to access them. Everyone talks about using a torque wrench, but nobody mentions how tight is must be. If anyone has done this themselves before please tell me how to do it. And should we use factory spark plugs, or go with the aftermarket plugs? Thanks.

My suggestion is that if you want to maintain the car yourself then buy the service manuals for it. Steve, aka SupraTRD, at Carson Toyota can get them for you at a great price. The torque specs for everything are included in the how tos. Just remember to take notice of any service bulletins that may indicate changes to torque settings.

I agree with you 100% that I need a service manual for the car. The problem is that no one carries them. I called both lexus dealer here in Phoenix and none of them had one. If Steve (SupraTRD) has one or can get one, I would probably buy it. How can I get in contact with him.

Everyone, be cautious when you wash your engine. I degreased and rinsed my motor to change the spark plugs, then discovered that the groove that the plugs are located in was filled with water. Blew them out with compressed air (them as in all three compartments, two plugs per) and let dry. Be careful, very careful. Water and cylinders do not mix. By the way, I have an SC3. Tip: Simple Green cuts grease like nobody's business. Even in diluted form.

Camshaft,
I usually simple green my engine, let it sit, wash it off, air compressor off the electrical (altenator etc.), start the car, and drive REALLY fast to get any extra water around the plugs that might have crept in.

Regarding shop manuals, I just received Vol. 1&2 for my 93 SC300 from Jeff Watson at Jay Mark Toyota in Houston for $116 including shipping. Be prepared to wait a few weeks though.

I was thinking instead of spending $100+ on the factory manual, I could try the Manual CD for $30 on E-Bay. Lots of people say that it would be the same, and some people say that it is a waste of money. I really want to hear the opinion of a person who has tried the CD themselves. So, anyone who has tried the CD please tell me if it as good as the factory manual. Thanks.

I haven't tried this one personally, but www.alldata.com will provide you access to shop manuals and technical service bulletins for $25/yr.. You could copy a manual and have access to the latest TSB's. I think that you can add another vehicle for like $15/yr.
