Default AC Replacement. To R134 or keep it R12? Help me out!!

Long story short, bought a 92 1jz swapped auto sc300 and the compressor is seized.

Recently bought a reman ac compressor, new dryer, and new expansion device all for around $250. To keep my warranty on the reman compressor, I have to have a certified mechanic install it. I got a nissan dealership close to me that will install it for $160 (not including installation of dryer and expansion device). Im currently living in a small town and the dealership is the only place I trust and they are cheap!

Im left with what I want to charge the system with, either R12 (off ebay and recharge it myself) or R134 and have the shop do it? Im not that mechanically inclined and dont know what all I have to buy for the R12 recharge. So im leaning toward R134.

What do yall suggest?

I would go with the R134. I had whatever came with my 93 SC and it went out, so the dealership put in a R134.

Converting from R12 to R134 is inexpensive and very easy to do. I went to autozone and got a kit for some where around $20. All there is to it is a diffret size of nut that fits in the ac system that alouds yu too recharge the car with the R134.....two converting nuts one goes near the radiator and the other one goes right on the A/C compressor. But be Carefull. Empty the whole system first and clean it.

I would keep it r12. It's not much more and will be colder. I don't know how much your system holds but 2 12 oz. cans will likely be enough. If your a/c is mediocre or you live in Phoenix, it is an easy decision. To do this yourself you will need a vacuum pump and a set of either r134 or r12 gauges. You can't just add it. Some oils are also not compatible with both refrigerants. Find out what you have in it now and if it will work with 134 if you go that route. I would change the schrader valves too while it's empty, they are cheap. I also wouldn't worry about the warranty. You are going to pay a shop $160 for something you can do. That would cover the gauges and pump and you will always be able to do your own a/c work. I don't know about you but $160 is a decent amount of money that I wouldn't want to part with if I didn't have to.

I would do r134 since you already opened the system. R12 is twice the price of R134 but R12 cools better.

Eather way go R134 it's cheaper Safer to use and you can find it anywhere at any time.

I would say that if you only paid $250 for these parts you might not have bought quality parts. Cheaply rebuilt a/c compressors will waste more of your time/money in the long run.

You do the compressor and drier at the same time.

See if you can get some FREEZE 12, it is an alternative to R12 and is cheaper, better. It works better than R134 in older cars that originally came with R12. You do not need a license to buy it either.I recharged my 85 300ZX with the Freeze 12 and the AC blows super cold. I got it from an Auto supply store in Stone Mountain GA. Do not have their name or number on me atm. Google freeze12 and see what you come up with. I will check to see if I can get you the store name and phone #.
