Question Morning Start: Car starts but starter "free spins" another second or two (not grind)

So I've had this car a few weeks now and notice that in the morning when I start the car the starter does not disengage right way - kinda "free spins" a whirly sound - not the sound if you hold the key all the way over - not that flywheel against starter gear grind - but a "vereem" and then all normal. The rest of the starts throughout the day and even moments later if I turn off and back on are normal. I read on the forum how hard the starter is as a DIY project and really don't want to toss money into this in the first month. I am basically planning on waiting this out - thoughts? Geez trying to describe the sound or symptom is strange on the forum.

"If" it is the starter how much does that repair usually run outside of dealership?

buy another starter at autozone or your favorite parts store. The starter's gear moves in to engage/spin the fly wheel when you start your car. It sounds like your gear might be getting stuck. Good luck. Oh, if you have your car on stands this is pretty easy to change. I changed mine with only one side of the car jack up before.

I had to get my starter replaced recently and it set me back about $400. Mine actually burned up when I started it up one day and the starter never disengaged. I couldn't get the battery cable off to stop it.. damn thing kept turning even when I had the key out and the car off.

Whew, I am a DIY weekend mechanic happy to hear it is not that hard of a job - will price the starter today at the Zone or Pep Boy's
