Alright so I swapped a transmission about 2 months ago into my sc400, the trans was said to only have 108k miles and work prefectly, well once I installed it, I found that it leaks from the bell housing, not a super bad leak though. Well since I started driving it I noticed that after 10 miles it begins to smoke quite bad, it smells like trans fluid. I'm just not sure what causes a trans to smoke like this, it's really bad, it leaves a cloud behind me. The trans shifts fine, runs quite smooth, but it begins to whine when it starts smoking and gets a bit of a vibration.
Am I ****ed or is there something I did wrong or forgot in the swap? and yes it's full of toyota ATF type 4 from the lexus dealer.

If it's leaking from the bell housing, I would guess that it's leaking from the front pump seal or torque converter. ATF could be getting on the exhaust and cause the smoke; from the amount smoke that you're seeing, it's probably something else. Can you tell where the smoke is coming from when you look at the tranny? Front or back?

Also forgot to include that I had to use a peice of heater hose to connect the coolant lines due to the way the guy who sold me the trans cut the lines from the other car.

What color os this cloud of smoke? Is it possible that your "coolant" hose made from heater hose isn't up to the pressure and is squirting a bit onto the exhaust? That would pretty much explain it all.

semi stripped drain plug bolt combined with a front transmission seal leak spraying the exhaust at moderate to high speeds. Not my problem anymore.
Ninja edit: I fixed the drain plug and minimalized the leak by adding enormous amounts of lucas ATF stuff, which works GREAT.
