troubleshooting
so im having the same problem and after reading these quotes i think im gonna check the linkage.I have an older model lexus ls 400 97 and if anyone has another ideal let me no please o an i think your SC sometimes go's into drive is because your engines cold so when it heats up it dosnt work for you!

See if it does this on flat ground or an incline. If you park and put it it P then release brake and apply the ebrake sometime the car rolls fwd or back slightly and will rotate the gears. That could make it difficult to engage in drive as its not all "lined up". This happend to me but turns out the PO some how managed to let caramel melt on the shifter housing. So when it was warm it was all gooey and would shift but when i whent to move it in the winter it suck all the time. Sometimes i would be able to get it and noticed caramel on the shifter track and pulled it apart and was like wtf...no more problems for me. I doubt thats your prob but maybe the housing itself needs to be cleaned and tightened if yours is loose!
