Both platforms have potential and have their pro's/con's. It honestly depends on weather you'd prefer to mod a V8 or I6. If you go with the 300 you can go NA-T or swap in a GTE for fairly cheap and achieve a good amount of power with little money. If you want to go 400 you can supercharge it and make decent power. If you can pick up a 5 speed SC300 that would be my choice of the two and probably the best "bang for your buck" in regards to power.
I just picked up a 95 SC300 5speed, great car, amazing handling. I wish the V8 came with a 5-6 speed though or i would opt for that one.Would be great to have V8 powerwith some NA mods on 5-6speed.
I was the same way when i first started looking but i could not get past the idea of having a 2jz NO ... lol so yea thats what i got and have been in love with it ever since! Just do what i did try to find one with the lowest miles for the lowest money and a color you like or can live with.
