Default Flexible coupling

The drive shaft is connected to the tranny via a flexible coupling. Its a hard rubber(?) disc that will cause vibration when it starts to fail, which was the case when I bought my sc400. Inspect it for cracks. Gl.

thanks again good2go - - - really helpful and my apologies for original *****iness. Got a couple more clues - this is weird. Mine is definitely the "flutter" or "playing card in bicycle spokes" sound - BUT - 2 things a bit different. The sound seems to manifest on deceleration, as I lift off the gas, and go away as soon as I apply the accelerator again - somewhat opposite of a few posts back. Also, it does not do it until the car is well warmed up. First thing in the morning for a few miles at least it just doesn't happen. It doesn't appear to be "rotational" - doesn't slow the tempo or speed up according to velocity. Tranny shifts smooooth, and just had major service and flush/fill of the trans fluid. Didn't make any difference in the sound. Pasted various info about the bearings, etc., and gonna provide to my mechanic. He tried to figure it out for an hour when he serviced the car. Used stethoscope and said the sound seemed to come from beneath the cupholder.

Hmmm, that is odd, I thought the tempo was speed related.

I'm not too familiar with the SC4 automatics, but just out of curiosity, where is the speedo gear in relation to the cup holder?

Hmmm . . . don't know, but will find out. Really wondering why the sound only manifests when the car is really warmed up. Mine is relatively low mileage for a '97 . . . 77K miles. The '92 I had a few years back made the same noise - never got any louder or caused any problems other than annoyance. Got to figure this out.

Something thing occurred to me, admittedly far fetched, but it should be eliminated. I was trying to think what sounds would be produced by the car that are mostly independent of speed/rpms; it's a pretty short list and mostly all of it is eliminated if the engine is off. Have you tried listening for the sound with the engine off and coasting? The specific thing I'm thinking of in this case is the fuel pump. Is it possible that it's a puttering pump sound that is resonating in the transmission tunnel at the point of one of the fuel line clamps??
