Advice on SC300 Sell, Part, or Fix?
Hey all,
I have a 1992 SC300 that was previously owned by a little old lady who never drove it and then by a Lexus Master Technician. The second owner kept an amazing amount of paperwork on the car and had every tiny detail recorded. He put in a new engine and upgraded just about everything you could upgrade. He added 17" wheels and the spoiler from an SC400.
I have owned it for a while, but haven't put a lot of miles on it. I had to have it repaired a couple of times from the standard SC300 problems like a leaky power steering pump. I have replaced the alternator, battery, etc. The internal finish is nice, though the seats are cracking now and it needs a couple of moulding clips replaced (no damaged molding, though). The body is in pretty good shape with just a couple of nicks in the paint and a faint scratch on one side.
About three years ago, I had taken it to a local tech shop for some maintenance and when I got the car back, after two months, it blew terrible white smoke out of it. After a year of being unable to drive the car, and unable to get the place to resolve the issue, I finally found the solution here on these forums.
So, last year when I went to register the car, it wouldn't pass emissions. After trying a couple of things, I managed to get the waiver, but it is only good for 1 year.
So, I haven't tested the emissions this year, though the car drives great. I'm going to get it tested, but if it fails, I need to evaluate my options.
Should I sell the car out of state (where there are no emission laws)?
Should I sell the car in state (Georgia) for parts or as a parts car?
or ...
Should I try to fix the emissions and sell the car normally?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Jase
(p.s. sorry for the long post)

It all depends on the condition of the car aside from the engine. It does sound like your rings might be done, you can rebuild the engine or swap in another engine. A stock 2jz is quite straight forward, you can also upgrade to 1jz or 2jz-gte.
